“Rothman’s music itself has drawn comparisons to the work of Joni Mitchell, Nora Jones, and other great songwriters who blend soft guitar-driven melodies with introspective lyrics. It’s hard to say whether the best part of her work is that it was created by exclusively womxn or that, with its blend of dream-pop gauziness and 70’s folk motifs, it’s a pure delight to listen to—or maybe each these things uplifts the other, ultimately creating something truly great and profoundly relevant for our times.”
Seeking to raise marginalized voices in the music industry by creating art with womxn all around the world, Seattle singer-songwriter Nora Rothman has been applauded for work as both an artist and activist. With music Teen Vogue has described as “mesmerizing,” Rothman—a Brown graduate with honors in poetry—creates an ethereal world with a folk-soul sound that is both classic and contemporary. Next up, she is preparing for the release of a brand new EP titled ‘Nothing New.’ Today, ahead of the EP’s July 12th release, she is revealing the first piece of the project with new single “strange.”

A masterpiece of slow-burning melodies and heart wrenching storytelling, “strange” features the stripped down singing voice of Rothman paired with soothing back-up vocals and piano production. “strange” was created with Los Angeles-based producer Kate Ellwanger (aka Dot) and will be released via Ellwanger’s female-run label Unspeakable Records. “My confessional singer-songwriter style is plated in Dot’s distinctive production,” explains Rothman. “The EP explores newness, nostalgia, and the negative space between them. In the end, it’s really nothing new — we’ve all been here before.” As for the remainder of the ‘Nothing New‘ EP, the project is compiled of five songs and features collaborations with poet Sarah Kay and indie musician Cape Francis.
