DJ / producer Attaque (Dominic Gentry) is poised to unveil his new album with the arrival of ‘Projection’ and will pre-empt its release with a haunting electro-pop track ‘A Thousand Skies’ featuring Black Jumper Club.

Dom details the track: “So I’d been spending some time with my friend Tom in the studio, mainly just having a few beers and listening to music. He was sketching out ideas and then hooked up with a singer called Scott Revel and Black Jumper Club was born. Luckily Tom is a good guy and was happy for me to have Scott feature on ‘A Thousand Skies’, I absolutely love Scott’s voice. It reminds me of Jeff Buckley and I tried to emphasise this aspect by pushing up the backing vocals. I like to think of the track as an odd hybrid of Jeff Buckley and M83.”

An electronic artist whose exhilarating experiments with genre, rhythm and song-writing have seen him tipped for big things by The Guardian, Q, NME and Radio 1. His dance singles, melding two-step garage, minimal house and techno, have been championed by Tiga and Erol Alkan, while his first album, 2014’s On Ly Ou came decorated in beguiling details, twinkling bells and vocals, hinting at influences from Burial to Pantha Du Prince and Mogwai.

Gentry, originally from Colchester, has a keen ear for melody, and his music has a disarming emotional power. These qualities have earned him radio play from Lauren Laverne, Huw Stephens, Tom Ravenscroft and Toddla T, while his coruscating live show has graced stages in Fabric, London, at Secret Garden Party, and around the world at Air Tokyo, Razzmatazz in Barcelona, Social Club Paris and Mysteryland, Amsterdam.

After extensive touring in 2014, Gentry built a new recording studio at a farm on the Essex-Suffolk border, producing for artists including Belgian techno maven Charlotte De Witte. But dissatisfied with the direction of his own material, in 2016 he set off around South East Asia with portable recording equipment. The inspiration came flooding out, and, now signed to Amplify Recordings, his new record Projectionsrepresents a bold new path for the producer.

The album Projection is a panoramic creation encompassing Attaque’s many inspirations. Dominique explains: “In psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud believed humans unconsciously projected unwanted emotions on to other people so that other people become carriers of those emotions. I feel creating music expands on that idea; that there are emotions, feelings and thoughts that cannot be communicated by language, and that creating music is a way to express those feelings as a way to make someone feels as you do. I wrote ‘Projection’ while travelling through India, Cambodia, Vietnam & Thailand. Armed with a small amount of equipment, each track was sketched out on cramped trains in India, on Rabbit Island in Cambodia (where there was only one hours electricity a day) and various other home stays, trains, cities and beaches.  It is an expression of where my head was at the time of writing it. I hope people enjoy listening to it as much as I did making it.”

Lead single ‘Over Not Yet’ beckons us in with warm synth chords, gentle vocals and melancholy harp, before erupting into a rolling break-beat, android bass and a hypnotic gated riff. ‘One Whisper’ is soaring, string-laden house, while the cathedral-sized electronics of ‘Proxima’ possess a wistful elegance. ‘Alternative Facts’ plays fast and loose with what we think we know, switching from bittersweet two-step into beatless trance, and back again. ‘Part of You’ is spacious, warm dance music that will earn comparisons with Bonobo or Maribou State, and ‘Find Us’ could be the highpoint, with its moody piano chords and cut up samples of Attaque’s vocals. All point to the breakthrough of one of the UK’s most exciting rising stars, whose new audio-visual live show will hit stages this summer.
