Csaba gives us some insight below into the difficult circumstances around trying to filming this video and how it all ended up coming together quite naturally due to a little help from some good friends…
“This video came together pretty organically, which probably had a lot to do with me being good friends with the video team. A lot of it was basically Charlie and Pash going “oh you know where would look really sick?” or “woah what’s that over there let’s shoot there”.
Due to lockdown circumstances, it made planning a really big intricate shoot next to impossible. That in combination with winter in Vancouver we basically jumped at any sunny days to get out and wrap up the video. A lot of the video planning ended up being me bringing the guitar and maybe whatever other props we thought might work. It was a super fun video to shoot and I feel like that’s visible in the finished product.” – Hotel Decor
Video Directors Charlie Sirovyak & Pavel Romano also added;
“We didn’t get to plan much for the “All The Rage” video. We drove into the mountain’s and started filming. The slapdash approach doesn’t always work when it comes to this type of thing, but we have a long history working with Hotel Decor and we’ve developed a pretty good dynamic over the years. It sounds corny but the process from beginning to end is just very “chill”. We have a lot of fun on these projects it definitely shows.”
Hotel Decor is a mixture of indie/dance/dream-pop elements which has a sound that could be likened to a mix between Metronomy, Toro Y Moi and Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs (T.E.E.D).
As Csaba explains below, the initial idea for ‘All The Rage’ started over a year ago but at that time he never really intended to have any vocals on it. With the theme of the song coming from a place of boredom and isolation, he still wanted to make something that was very catchy but also a bit wonky…
“I had the instrumental for this track just sitting on my hard drive for almost a year and originally the track wasn’t even supposed to have my vocals on it. I had previously written a version with vocals which I demoed for some people at this west Canadian music event in the Yukon back in 2019, but I ended up scrapping that version because I felt like my writing and confidence with vocals was more developed since the previous time I visited the track.
Stylistically I wanted to make something definitely pretty wonky and catchy. The theme of the song kind of came about subconsciously. I ended up freestyling a lot of the vocals and just going with the flow of whatever was coming out while I was tracking. I think I must have been feeling pretty boxed in and kind of bored with my circumstances as that’s what the song ended up being about.” – Hotel Decor
