Vaarwell conjure intoxicating ethereal pop on ‘Consume’

Taken from new EP ‘Consume & Grow’ due June 2021

London based indie-electronic Portuguese duo Vaarwell conjure intoxicating ethereal pop on new track ‘Consume’, lifted from the forthcoming EP ‘Consume & Grow’ due to land in June 2021.

“Consume” is Vaarwell’s third single this year and it’s a song born out of the anxieties of sisterhood, an emotional appeal from an older to a younger sister about taking the time to grow and mature, being wary of the cruelties of the outside world and the importance of being true to the core values they share.

Margarida says: “‘Consume’ is my favourite song from the EP as it’s the one that’s closest to my heart. It was born from my anxieties as an older sister to three young girls. I’m very close to my siblings (all females so the sisterhood is strong) and a particular conversation with my older sisters about the future of the young ones and entering young adulthood made me worry about everything – who they will become, the decisions and inevitable mistakes they will make, the people who they will hang out with. It became a very motherly-like worry but with the frustration that I wouldn’t be able to directly control their whereabouts and life in general. It was very emotional for me thinking about them growing up. I want them to be as wise as possible but I don’t have direct control over that, and I certainly have no control over the world and the cruelties it can inflict on young women. I felt the need to write a cautionary song, something to remind about growing slowly and calmly in order to achieve a strong, happy and mature growth, how they shouldn’t feel the need need to rush into things or change to be accepted, and that they should never let go of their core values.”

Since Vaarwell’s formation, the duo has received support from BBC Radio1, BBC6 Music, NHK (JPN) and P3 Sveriges (SE) as well as accolades from tastemaker press Atwood, Noctis, Kaltblut, Stereogum, Complex, Clash and The Line of Best Fit.

They have also collaborated with Xinobi, co-writing and singing in the single ‘Far Away Place’, with over 5M streams on Spotify and placements on Netflix’s original series “Trinkets” and Grand Theft Auto 5 Online.

Following the success of their second EP ‘Early Rise’ (2019) and the singles, ‘No Place for You’ and ‘False Promises’, Vaarwell performed at festivals such as SXSW, Waves Vienna, Rock in Rio Lisboa, Vodafone Paredes de Coura and NOS Alive.

Since their move to London in late 2020, the duo have written and self-produced a 4 track EP, ‘Consume & Grow’, to be released May 2021. The electro-pop record is a reflection of their new polished sound, influenced by the city’s atmosphere and the UK based electronic, alt-pop, r&b, and hip-hop music scene.

‘Consume’ is released on 21st May.
