Oliver Heldens returns to the Essential Mix as HI-LO

Oliver Heldens returns to the Essential Mix as HI-LO ile ilgili görsel sonucu

To be tapped for an Essential Mix at any age is a highly prestigious honor – indeed, there remain many veteran DJs who still have yet to step behind BBC Radio 1’s hallowed decks. It’s fair to say that Oliver Heldens has just achieved a historic feat in the program’s history this weekend, providing his second Essential Mix at the age of 22. In 2014, as he was pioneering the then-burgeoning future house genre, the prodigious Dutch producer debuted on the series at just 19.

For his sophomore contribution to the program, Heldens dons his HI-LO alias, the project through which he purveys music of a more deep house, electro, and techno-influenced character than his standard fare. As his alter-ego, the Heldeep label-head delivers a mix that explores a variety of energizing club music from eclectic roots. Recognizable vocals from Beastie Boys’ “Intergalactic” and Justin Timberlake’s “SexyBack” play as important a role in the overall set as the selections from contemporary techno mainstays such as Mark Reeve and Pig&Dan.

Throughout the broadcast, Heldens also pays homage to some of dance music’s most esteemed veterans, including classics from Mr. Oizo, Orlando Voorn, and Richie Hawtin. Amid his eclectic set, the artist further features a number of songs from both of his projects’ catalogues, perhaps most notably with his Sander van Doorn collaboration, “WTF” (a modernized take on Fatboy Slim and Benny Benassi’s beloved “What The Fuck”).

Mura Masa stuns in his eclectic, emotive Essential Mix debut

Mura Masa Essential Mix ile ilgili görsel sonucu

As less than a week remains until July 14, Mura Masa has begun to share glimpses into his self-titled debut album. In the past two weeks, the British artist has shared four new songs off of the LP, featuring the likes of Bonzai, Tom Tripp, and the iconic Damon Albarn. The breadth of Alex Crossan’s critical achievements at the age of 21 is staggering, and this weekend marked yet another milestone for the prodigious producer: his first-ever Essential Mix for BBC Radio 1.

Given the imminence of Mura Masa, it would seemingly be tempting for Crossan to center his mix around his forthcoming album. Naturally, the artist doesn’t evade drawing from his catalogue – three of his own songs appear throughout the broadcast, as well as a remix of his A$AP Rocky collaboration, “Love$ick,” from Mumdance. However, Mura Masa opts to use the Essential Mix as a platform to show off his acute, eclectic tastes.

Opening with Perfume Genius’ breathtaking single, “Otherside,” Mura Masa weaves together a set from some of electronic music’s greatest composers – including Four Tet, Aphex Twin, James Blake, and Jamie xx – and influential figures from across genre bounds. Ranging from Thom Yorke to A$AP Mob, and from MF DOOM to Wham!, Alex Crossan leaves no stone unturned in his impressively tasteful Essential Mix debut.
