London-based musician, Amy Steele, has revealed that she enjoys bingeing on the most introspective of contemporary Afrobeats records.
The young musician, who is also trained as a medical doctor, listed Wizkid, Burna Boy as some of her top picks when it comes to introspective Afrobeats songs on her latest Human Nature playlist. The playlist, according to Amy, contains music that reflects “issues we grapple with as a society…and features songs that resonate with the current social climate and themes of humanity, justice and kindness.” Interestingly, it also tributes the King of Pop Michael Jackson 1983 hit of the same title.
Wizkid’s 2020 summer jam, “Blessed”, featuring the reggae royal Damian Marley, as well as Burna Boy’s 2022 moody groove, “Common Person” both made the playlist, which also houses tracks from global powerhouses including Michael Jackson, Summer Walker, Stormzy, as well as Amy Steele herself.
“Music is about moving people; it connects and makes you feel,” Amy says about the playlist. “Given the year we’ve had, social consciousness is at the forefront of people’s minds. This playlist shines a light on those things—about being human, justice, and the issues we grapple with as a society and as individuals.” Amy also mentions that she carefully selected tracks that not only highlight these themes but also showcase her unique musical inspirations.
In the last few years, Amy rose to popularity with a series of covers that addressed important messages for the times, including ‘Slow Up,’ a track reminding us to stay positive and true to ourselves amidst social injustice. Her Drake cover, ’44 22,’ metaphorically explored the concept of unfulfilled promises and the human struggle to meet expectations.
From her debut EP, Memories In Watercolour, to her last project, Smoke Castles, Amy Steele’s music, has continued to garner positive acclaim within the English and American media circles, including BBC Radio, Kiss FM, Rinse, and prominent media outlets including Clash, Hunger, Wonderland Magazine, Echoes Magazine, The Voice Newspaper, All Hip Hop, Singersroom, Link Up TV, This Is RnB, and UKF.
With all eyes anticipating her comeback record, the 29-year-old singer continues to glide across the scene with her distinctive eclectic fusions, as well as her charm and authenticity.
