Post-Punk-Indie-Rockers Owners Club release their debut EP via Goo Records – an explosive, grungy yet joyous and radiant offering that takes listeners on a journey through the rich tapestry of British rock history while delivering a sound that’s unmistakably fresh and unique.
With influences ranging from Roxy Music to The Strokes, and themes spanning from Double Diamond beer to vampires and the occult, Owners Club irreverently label themselves as a “Pub Rock Four Piece”, a statement which perfectly fits the bands tongue-in-cheek image yet doesn’t nearly capture the full depth and impact of their music.
Recorded at the renowned Small Pond Studios in Brighton in April of this year, and produced and mixed by Matt Gleeson (of WELLY fame), the new EP vinyl release showcases the band’s explosive and tightly-wound sound that’s been honed to perfection.
Following the first single ‘Double Diamond’ (inspired by a chance purchase of a Double Diamond-branded ashtray at a car boot sale near Dorking train station, this track weaves a romantic and gritty narrative around the life of the ashtray itself), the EP’s new lead track ‘Village Green’ offers another look at the band’s unique post-punk sound.
A swaying backdrop led by intricate acoustics, biting electric guitar licks and tight drums create an understated, yet infectious and buoyant backdrop for the boxy, urgent vocal delivery. Once again displaying the band’s captivating and at times poignant lyricism and tongue-in-cheek, irreverent delivery, the track explores life in the mindset of people in the UK countryside, or as the band explain: “Village Green doesn’t look through rose-tinted glasses and explores the uglier underbelly of our little Island and the people who live on it.”
As the track progresses introducing subtle glockenspiel and distant vocal harmonies, it reaches an explosive crescendo at the 2 minute mark, as the guitar soars and the band deliver the intense energy of their live shows through the last minute of the track.
Speaking more in depth about the EP as a whole, the band explain: “Double Diamond and Village Green are reflections on Britain and British culture. While Double Diamond has a more nostalgic outlook, Village Green takes a swipe at the mindset of some brits. Evil Twin just came along for the ride.
Although… maybe Village Green is the Evil Twin to Double Diamond? Maybe that’s what we were trying to say by including it… you decide.
Written by us and recorded and produced by our pal Matt from WELLY, it’s a labour of love and we hope you enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed writing and recording it.”
Having already gained acclaim from BBC Introducing and sold out shows across the South Coast, Owners Club’s EP promises to be a thrilling debut on vinyl, and it’s a testament to the band’s commitment to crafting music that’s both evocative and exhilarating. With a sound that draws from the legacy of British greats like Marc Bolan and The Jam, with a nod to NYC icons such as The Strokes and The Walkmen, Owners Club invites you to embark on a musical journey that’s as immersive as it is electrifying.
Stay tuned for the EP’s release and experience Owners Club’s distinctive sound for yourself. This is a band that’s poised to leave an indelible mark on the world of rock music, and ‘Village Green’ is just the beginning.
