Buzz Violet debuts with his vibrant first single ‘Energy’. Buzz Violet is the new solo side project from acclaimed alt-pop duo Petrie lead vocalist George Edward. Created as an outlet to express new emotions felt in the aftermath of the pandemic, this period saw George undergo a number of significant life-changing events including: a complicated breakup, the unavoidable physical separation of him and bandmate Laurie Debnam (the other half of Petrie), and a near fatal accident of one of his nearest and dearest.
Built around a shuffling beat, grounding bass and antsy indie-pop tinted guitar lines, ‘Energy’ possesses a light, easy-going yet enigmatic aura. The exuberant and joyous tone is contrasted with a warmingly reflective and melancholy undercurrent. Buzz’s subtly distorted, silky, effortlessly charismatic and controlled lead vocal sings an infectious melody that sticks with you well after the first listen. A spotless bedroom-pop bop and a strikingly complete and unique sounding debut.
Speaking about the track, Buzz explains: “‘Energy’ is a confession of one’s tendency to drink too much on the weekend and make poor decisions that negatively affect the relationships with those around you.
I wrote it in the aftermath of a big night out where I made a fool of myself and regretted it – something I’m sure most of us can relate to! The narrator is explaining to a love interest that meeting them has inspired a desire to live life to the fullest by leading a crazy, hedonistic lifestyle as a means to recover from a dark period in the years beforehand. Although the love interest shares similar tendencies, they feel he’s taken it too far and he needs to ‘calm it down’ a little or he risks damaging the relationship.”
Having previously received support from the likes of Complex, Stereogum, NME, NYLON, EARMILK, The Line of Best Fit, Clash, COLORS, Hillydilly and many more, George is no stranger to national press and radio support with radio play on BBC 1 Xtra, BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 6 music and Radio X. Having amassed over 4 million streams in total on Spotify alone with Petrie, George is hoping to experience the same level of success and beyond with Buzz Violet.
