At 19, Toronto based singer songwriter Mike Ruby received a full scholarship at the Manhattan School of Music and moved to New York in pursuit of a jazz career as a sax player. That education and exposure gave him a unique sense of musicianship that shines through in his melodic writing to this day. After signing a record deal to a subsidiary of Universal Music, he began playing with Brooklyn based synth pop band St. Lucia, which opened his ears to a realm of synth and dance-like possibilities. Mike has since spent time in Los Angeles, Nashville and Toronto writing for himself and other artists through his publishing company, and has garnered over 15 million streams as a writer.
His sophomore EP as a solo artist, a million you’s, will be released this coming fall. Its first single, “girls that aren’t my girlfriend,” was inspired by the dissolution of a relationship Mike thought to be the one. After taking the time to move on, he found that talking to women in a romantic way still felt weird.
