ne from the vault! Newcastle Upon Tyne indie-pop outfit Cat Ryan have released their new single ‘Free From This’: an upbeat, bright and punchy slice of surf-soaked indie-pop.
The track marks something of an origin point for the band, even arriving years after it was written. “Free From This is where Cat Ryan began,” Mary-Anne Murphy explains (lead singer / founder). “I’d been writing music for years, but when this song came together I remember thinking, this is the sound I didn’t even know I was looking for.”
That realisation led directly to the band’s name and creative direction. Since then, ‘Free From This’ has been a live staple, and this release finally gives it its proper studio home, closing one chapter as the band looks ahead to newer material.
Mixed and mastered by Tilly Louise, ‘Free From This’ follows the band’s acclaimed EP ‘King of the World’ and singles including ‘Mannerism’, ‘Rex Mundi’ and ‘Lost My Connection’. Since forming in 2020, Cat Ryan have picked up support from BBC Radio 1, BBC 6 Music and Radio X, alongside a Spotify New Music Friday playlist placement, and have built a strong live reputation with appearances at The Great Escape, Truck, Y NOT and Kendal Calling, plus support slots for Sundara Karma, Hot Wax, Alfie Templeman and SPRINTS.
Splitting their time between Newcastle and London, the band credit Newcastle’s close-knit, supportive scene with shaping their sound and encouraging them to stay true to their own creative voice.
An exciting date to save, Cat Ryan have announced that they will be playing Truck Festival’s Nest stage as part of a Dork Magazine showcase in summer of 2026.

Free From This is where Cat Ryan began. I’d been writing music for years, but when this song came together I remember thinking – this is the sound I didn’t even know I was looking for. From then, I knew exactly the direction I was going in, and consequently decided on the name Cat Ryan for my artist name. It was a pivotal moment for me as a songwriter.
Since moving to Newcastle and forming the band, we’ve been playing Free From This live for years and it always felt like it deserved a proper release. It’s been sitting in my demos folder ever since writing it, and coming back to it, re-recording it and finally putting it out feels like closing a chapter before moving onto releasing our newer material.
