Los Angeles indie rock trio EAST OF JUNE have announced a new live single of the Hoobastank classic “Crawling in the Dark” to commemorate the band’s 20-year anniversary of their debut album. East of June enlisted the help of Hoobastank’s own Dan Estrin to perform on the track during a live recording session at EastWest Studios in Los Angeles. The single is available on all streaming platforms now with a supporting live performance video on East of June’s YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook pages.
“We wanted to do something special for this release, and being able to involve one of our oldest friends in Dan turned out to be a no-brainer for us.” says East of June bassist Dirk Lance. Lance, a founding member of Incubus who co-wrote and performed on the famed rock band’s hit albums, S.C.I.E.N.C.E., Make Yourself, and Morning View, was a force behind the group’s biggest songs “Drive,” “Pardon Me,” and “Wish You Were Here”.
Adds Lance: “We had the opportunity to go into EastWest and record 6 songs from our catalog live, and it felt natural for us to ask Dan if he wanted to be a part of it. It was a blast.”
Adds Hoobstank’s Dan Estrin: “It’s been a lot of fun getting to join some old friends to do a new take on “Crawling In The Dark.” Being the 20th Anniversary of our first album, revisiting that time has brought back a lot of great memories. I’ve known Dirk since we were kids, we have gone from seeing each other play tiny local bar stages then onto playing massive arenas. We’ve been lucky enough to have traveled all over the world together playing music in our separate bands and watched each other perform from the side of the stage so many times. So 20 years later it’s been really nice to get in a room with him, Kyle & Emily and do a thing called music!”
According to Emily Rath, lead singer for EAST OF JUNE, “During last year’s lockdown I never felt more creative as an artist. Even though my world got smaller at times, I realized that my perception could become my reality if I wasn’t careful. I’ve missed playing live and this song [Crawling in the Dark] really just spoke to me. We couldn’t be prouder of our version of this tune and all the others we captured during the live session.”
East of June guitarist Kyle Mortensen adds, “I remember when ’Crawling’ first dropped and how proud I was of those guys and just excited for their future as a band. I’ve seen Dan [Estrin] play it live dozens of times so him being cool enough to let us put our own spin on it and then receiving such a warm response from the rest of the band really confirmed for me how amazing and timeless those lyrics truly are.”
Formed in 2018, EAST OF JUNE is bassist Dirk Lance, vocalist Emily Rath and guitarist Kyle Mortensen. Their new 5-song EP “Omens & Signs” is available now on all streaming platforms now.
