Born and based in Vancouver, Marcus James is well-known for his collaborative works, having worked with the likes of multi-platinum selling artist Trevor Guthrie, remixed Dylan Matthew’s ‘Saturday Night’ as well as Warped Tour bands Anarbor and Courage My Love. The rising star has received support from the likes of Your EDM, EDM.com, EARMILK, MrRevillz, Substream Magazine, Tropical House Records and Vancouver Sun, all of which has contributed to his noteworthy play count of over 7.4 million streams across platforms.
RYYZN is a Vancouver-based duo comprised of David York and Jessie Elias who come from Calgary and Saskatoon respectively. The pair have received significant attention on streaming platforms with features on the tastemaker Youtube channels Audio Library, Mr Revillz, AirwaveMusicTV, and ChillTracks as well as appearing on the Spotify playlists for New Music Friday: Canada, Indie pop & chill and Fresh Finds. As a result, RYYZN currently sit at an impressive play count of well over 11 million.
“Getting a chance to redo Night Light was a treat for me. Normally when you sing vocals for a pop record, you have to sort of keep everything very simple and focused. But with the acoustic stripped-down remake, it gave me license to have some fun with it. I got to really SING the song, and throw some fun little changes into it that I always wanted but thought maybe weren’t as ‘poppy’.” RYYZN on the stripped version of the single.
A single originally designed to display emotional vulnerability heightens its level of deep intimacy further as it’s plunged into the acoustic world. Marcus James and RYYZN take a deceivingly simple approach to the stripped back version – allowing what was once an emo-house hit to enter the world of indie where the lyrics take centre stage and gentle strumming builds the surrounding atmosphere. The stripped style of ‘Night Light’ sits in closer comparison to the likes of Dayglow, My Morning Jacket, Jacob Lee and Vance Joy.
Marcus James gives his thoughts on the release: “When RYYZN and I started working on the EP, we wrote Night Light first and sketched out all the songs in a stripped-down form. The whole EP existed as four acoustic tracks before we produced it out into the dance space, so it feels fitting to record the songs the way they were first written and release them as a b-side in their original form.”
