Like most good indie bands of the past two decades, corner club formed following an awkward nod across the room at a college party. Soon after, Sav & Mike moved to New York and started creating bedroom demos and releasing them to the world, where thanks to Spotify they started to establish a global fan base under their moniker.

After numerous indie-pop releases and an EP, they now find themselves on the cusp of their next chapter, with single dreaming (梦中) marking the new beginning. The release is a profound reflection of the loss of Sav’s Grandmother during Covid. Stripped down to layers of vocals and acoustic guitar a la Phoebe Bridgers, dreaming hints at the diasporic experience of grasping onto multi-generational family bonds while thousands of miles away from a previous homeland.

On the track, they say:

“The opening line, ‘You visited me last night // forty years younger’ references a dream shared over the family group chat, as loved ones who left China years ago were forced to process and grieve from the opposite side of the world. Writing dreaming (梦中) was a way to process my grandma’s death, starting with a dream that my aunt shared and weaving in messages and memories from my family.”

There is so much emotion poured into ‘dreaming (梦中)’ that is almost impossible to sum up with words alone, but when an artist is willing to lay down their heart into a song like this it is hard not to see their careers taking a significant turn for the better. The single is out on the 12th of May across DSPs and is sure to set the world alight, one person (who needs to hear it) at a time.

BIO

corner club have already developed a name for themselves on the local scene, co-headlining the infamous Mercury Lounge in New York. The pair released their first EP, “little love lullabies,” at the beginning of 2021 which Spotify took a shine to as well as receiving critical acclaim from the likes of Atwood Magazine and more.

With over 3 million streams to date, significant editorial support (Fresh Finds, Fresh Finds: Indie, Dope AF), and landing on Thailand’s Viral 50, it’s safe to say that corner club are carving out a career for themselves in the indie-pop world.
