Coruja Jones releases his latest single ‘The Day I Die’

Coruja Jones, the songwriting project of Manchester-based musician and songwriter Dan Jones, proudly releases his latest single, ‘The Day I Die.’ This introspective track, produced by Sam Vicary of The Cinematic Orchestra, is the first single from his upcoming EP, ‘Undo,’ set to be released later this year.

‘The Day I Die’ encapsulates the essence of expansive, melancholic, and atmospheric indie-folk. The song explores themes of surrender and acceptance, delving into the emotional journey of healing after loss. Reflecting on the process of moving on from grief, this track builds on Jones’s previous work, which addressed the fresh pain of his father’s passing in 2016. ‘The Day I Die; represents a further step in his journey, embracing the inevitability of death and loss, whether it be the end of a relationship or a part of oneself.

Musically, ‘The Day I Die’ combines intricate acoustic guitar work with expansive delays and effects, complemented by Jones’s ethereal vocals. The track’s creation was a deeply collaborative effort, with Jones and his writing partner Jake Stentiford retreating to the Welsh hills to craft demos in a barn, accompanied only by their guitars and the natural ambience. This organic approach was preserved in the final recording, where all guitar tracks were recorded live to capture the duo’s unique synergy. The production, enhanced by Sam Vicary’s double bass and Adam Dawson’s percussive touch, adds a spatial and dynamic layer to the song, creating a rich and immersive listening experience.

“This track in particular I finished writing it at dawn in that barn where we made the demos in the summer of 2022, feeling like I had moved on to a different phase of healing after losing my Dad,” Jones reflects. “The journey of acceptance and welcoming death and loss with open arms, whether that be actual death, the death of a relationship, or even a part of yourself that you have put to bed. I hope this track can help others on their healing journey.”

Originally hailing from Dudley in the West Midlands, Dan Jones launched Coruja Jones as a project that combines beautiful songs with soaring high notes, intricate guitar work, and killer grooves. His music has been championed by BBC 6 Music’s Tom Robinson and he has toured with Grammy award-winning singer-songwriter Joe Jackson. Praised for his ability to craft songs that “let the light in” and create atmosphere and anticipation, Jones stands out in the indie-folk genre.

With the release of ‘The Day I Die’, Coruja Jones gears up for his upcoming EP ‘Undo,’ which delves into the healing process in various forms. The EP examines the calm and chaos of self-betterment and the desire to heal others’ hardships, all through the lens of love. With woody acoustic instrumentation, expansive delays, and Jones’s versatile vocals, ‘Undo’ promises to be a captivating body of work that resonates deeply with listeners.
