‘Moon Under Water’ is a deeply introspective single, written in a California motel room in the aftermath of the breakup of his band. David Barr’s poignant lyrics delve into themes of loss, self-destruction, and the enduring nature of love amidst adversity. Drawing from his own personal journey shaped by living across the globe, and grappling with the recent loss of his mother to mental health and addiction,

‘Moon Under Water’ unfolds as a metaphorical narrative, exploring the protagonist’s struggles with self-destruction, and an inability to accept love. The song’s climax takes a dark turn as the character, consumed by rage and loss, attempts to drown the moon, a symbol of love and romance, in the ocean, symbolizing his own descent into chaos. Ultimately, the realization dawns that the moon cannot be destroyed, as it is only a reflection. This realization symbolizes a profound truth – that despite the hardships and attempts at self-sabotage, the essence of love and connection endures, even if momentarily obscured. The recurring lyrics of being “in The Rolling Stones” and “kicking through the walls” suggests a defiant spirit, a determination to break through barriers, and perhaps a nod to the resilience required to navigate life’s challenges.

The song was recorded at Hidden City Studios in Santa Barbara, with Grammy-nominated producer Elliot Lanam. Additional parts were then added in West Hollywood with multi-platinum awarded producer Anthony J Resta, who also did the final mix of the recording.

Hailing from Dunfermline, Scotland, David has split his time between, London, New York, LA, and Edinburgh, steadily growing his fanbase across both sides of the Atlantic. Following his departure from The Moon Kids, Barr captured attention with his debut single, ‘Monday’s Rain’, earning accolades and features in esteemed publications like ‘Clash Magazine’ and ‘Earmilk’. Now, with ‘Moon Under Water’, Barr unveils a new dimension of his artistry, weaving together raw emotion and atmospheric storytelling to create a captivating musical experience.
