Today, December 17th, rising electronic producer DEFSET enlists in-demand beatsmith, Berghain resident and all-round techno favourite Steffi for a ground-shaking, trance-inducing remix of ‘Bathtime’, via EMK – the new electronic music platform launched by Kartel Music Group.

One of the lead singles from his stellar debut album – ‘Proximity’, the rework is the second remix from the well-received debut album, following Locked Groove’s remix of ‘Shira2’. Packed full of suave, modulated synthesis and undulating 4×4 pressure, Steffi’s aptly-titled ‘Dubbed Out Boogie Mix’ retains all the glorious dark charisma of the original whilst adding an esteemed new layer of techno-etched debauchery.

Here, Steffi gleefully builds on DEFSET’s original skulking, downtempo workout – itself a verified masterclass of oozing, methodical sonic manipulation and experimentation – kicking things up a notch and firing out a barrage of low-ceilinged dub/minimal artillery. The best thing is, it’s as funky as it is lethal; a real head-turner, and the perfect balance between both much-loved spectrums.

Praised by Beatportal as ‘a rising star’ and ‘luscious, visceral and energetic’, and with further sustained support from FAZEmag, DEFSET built ‘Bathtime’ around a sample of an acapella of legendary Jamaican reggae group Black Uruhu he found. Talking about the creative process behind the track, he explains; “I used to be the drummer in a ska/reggae band and the section at the start was something I had written for that. The Black Uruhu sample fitted beautifully and the song evolved from there.”

This followed previous singles ‘Deadlines’and ‘Shira 2’which demonstrated DEFSET’s mastery in using modular synthesizers and outboard gear to create a pallet of evolving melodies over syncopated, glitched out rhythms, delivering a deeply accomplished sonic blend of immersive techno and atmospheric electronic music.

As the wholly diverse, fully-fledged ‘Proximity’ LP continues to make waves across the electronic spectrum, and with the inimitable Steffi’s low-slung, toe-tapping remix of ‘Bathtime’ due to garner some serious attention it its own right, DEFSET definitely isn’t resting on his laurels. Looking ahead to 2022, and with a new EP and plenty of fresh material on the way, the upcoming year is a dead cert for yet more seriously forward-thinking output from DEFSET – keep your ears to the ground for more news coming soon.
