Ebony Buckle is a London-based singer/songwriter, originally from her tropical seaside home of Townsville, Australia. Writing and performing with her husband, musician Nick Burns, who also produces her music, Buckle uses captivating stories to hold a mirror up to herself and the world. Reflected in these songs is our humanity – our wants and needs, our struggles to fit in or break out. Throughout all of this is the hope that we can connect, that we can see the magnificent beauty of our universe and that we can grow and learn and evolve without fear.

Buckle is an independent artist and loves having creative freedom in the work she creates. She has spent the last year and a half building a supportive community on Patreon, who are funding her musical projects.

You Took Your Time is her latest single and was written this year after a period of burnout.

“This year has been especially full on as we have released a new song and music video every month! I have felt very exhausted and overwhelmed at times which isn’t great for creativity. I wrote this song to my creative self, after not being able to write anything for a while. It was my way of saying “oh hello, I’ve been waiting for you to come home”.

Of the recording process, Buckle says; “I was playing this melody on the piano and so we started recording, just to see what came out. It only took four takes and we had a song. We decided to use the original vocal takes from this session as they seemed so emotional and raw.”

Using a slightly distorted vocal effect, Buckle’s vocals are accompanied by rolling piano and an emotional cello. The lyrics are simple and repetitive as she sings “I’ve been waiting for you to arrive, I’ve been watching the world from outside.” The track was once again produced by her husband and co-writer Nick Burns.

“You Took Your Time” is the seventh track from her upcoming album Disco Lasers. The album is a collection of audio-visual stories celebrating the wonders of our universe and how we as human beings make sense of our existence through folklore legends, science and our imagination. Buckle reveals, “The album as a whole is very atmospheric, almost cinematic. Each song is arranged to tell that specific story.” The music video is completely animated by Luke Taylor. In keeping with the sci-fi nature of Buckle’s previous releases this year, an old computer sits in a dusty room. It hasn’t been used for a long time and has been waiting for someone to come along. “We really loved this idea of a computer who has been desperately waiting for a human being to come along and use it”.

For those who are curious to have a sneak peak into Buckle’s world, we recommend her newsletter ‘letters from a strange planet’, which is sent out monthly and is filled with stories and news about the world she is creating.
