Provider was created and written out of pure empathy. Seeing the world through someone else’s eyes and experience adds a powerful and haunting moment in the debut EP. Etta shared: Song-writing can sometimes feel like a very self-centered thing if all you’re doing is writing about yourself constantly. I would also get very bored! It made me realize how empathy can become a strange, but interesting place to write from. I loved trying to make it so sonically dissonant, dark, and aggressive in places.”
View From The Bridge is an impressively intricate 5-track record that sees the newcomer navigate moments of vulnerability with her articulate and impressive songwriting. It’s both reflective and considered through-out, and executed in a way that makes it easy to earmark the 20-year-old as one to watch for 2022.
Speaking about the record, Etta shares: “View From The Bridge is a personal and intimate experience that I think expresses universal sentiments which I hope people can relate to. Each song represents a specific time-stamp of loss, regret, and damage. It was important for me that there was a common thread that held them all together. Although it seems like quite a sonically and emotionally heavy world, there is a desire to strive for something better, a search for hope that flows throughout. I hope that people listening to the EP will come away with a feeling of reconciliation.”
‘View From The Bridge’ Tracklist
1.View From The Bridge
2. Hide & Seek
3. Provider
4. Salt Lake City ft. Matt Maltese
5. Confessional
Listeners will discover her EP’s title track ‘View From The Bridge’ is a captivating opener led by stripped-back vocals that transcend into a hymn-like melody. Sharing more, Etta explained: I knew this one would open the EP. It’s definitely not a warm, gentle welcome. It takes you straight into a place of intimacy, self-aware narcissistic tendencies, and regret. It’s pretty brutal. It was important that I had no ulterior motives with this song. I didn’t want to challenge, aggravate, or try to be clever with it, I just wanted it to form itself and be what it was.
Etta Marcus only launched back in October 2021 with her stand-out debut single “Hide & Seek”. That song was lauded by the likes of Clash who said “It’s a refreshingly mature debut, one that points to exciting times ahead.” Since then she’s played at Communion’s showcase at The Social and has already amassed over 950,000 global streams over the track’s short life.
Etta’s Second single “Salt Lake City”arrived at the end of last year and took form as a americana inspired duet with UK’s tastemaker darling, Matt Maltese. The track instantly feels both reflective and timeless. Explaining further, Etta shares: “Salt lake city is wrapped in delusion. The idea of moving somewhere for someone and thinking that it will mend things, when deep down you know it won’t. I think it’s something a lot of us have done, not necessarily moving to another country, but compromising a little too much for someone that isn’t worth it.”
The EP closes with the third new song on the EP ‘Confessional’, a personal and reassuring track featuring Etta mum at the end. “At the time of writing this I was reflecting on a specific point in time, and finally coming to terms with my feelings. To me, it’s an empowering song. To be able to shout ‘I can’t get up in the morning’/’don’t ask me how I’m doing’, felt good. The voice at the end is my mum giving me a much-needed pep talk and imparting her wonderful words of wisdom.” Etta Shared.
At just 20 years old, Etta Marcus is already an older hand when it comes to songwriting, penning music since she was 14. Born-and-bred in Brixton, South London, she’s been honing her worldly sound and style, pulling from a melting pot of influences including everything from David Bowie to Fountains of Wayne, leaving her with a style that is truly her own. Already securing herself as an artist to watch, she has already racked up almost 200 thousand monthly listeners. Next Month she will be joining Matt Maltese on tour across the UK and later in the month, she’ll be hitting the road with Tom Odell. With more touring news around the corner, Etta Marcus is without doubt someone for your 2022 New Music Radars.
