EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH : Nausica

Nausica kicks off 2024 on Toolroom Trax with her signature sound of Latin Tech in ‘Stupid Disco’.

An artist that undoubtedly broke through in a major way in 2023 with debuts on Toolroom, Moon Harbour and Material that saw mass support from some of the underground’s hottest players such as John Summit, Mau P, Solardo, MK, Francisco Allendes, Danny Howard on BBC R1 and many more. Toolroom is excited to work with Nausica again this year who without doubt is going to be a standout one to watch this 2024.

Hi Nausica – how has the year been treating you so far?

Hi, it’s a real pleasure to have a chat together.

2023 was a really difficult and complicated year. Lots of satisfaction when it comes to music. I have achieved goals that I never imagined. I met the entire Toolroom Team personally, my records have toured the world. Unfortunately from a personal perspective, I had a great loss in my family and I still haven’t fully overcome it. In short, a magnificent year for work but really difficult on a personal level.

Where do you think the impulse to create music comes from for you?

Music for me is life. I have the impulse to create something new, every time I listen to the Tracks to include in my Sets. It’s a continuous challenge with myself. Being able to create the right sound that everyone needs on the track and enjoying people’s reaction. I spend whole days listening to the most varied genres and then personalizing them, making them mine and using them best for my Sound.

What was the scene like in Italy where you were growing up?

I personally have encountered many difficulties. Unfortunately, being a woman didn’t help me. I always had to prove more than anyone else. As far as sound is concerned, we are light years behind the rest of the world. I leave this question with a huge NO COMMENT.

Did you find it easy to connect musically with other like minded people?

Music has a Universal language. And above all it gets everywhere. This is the main reason why I chose this job. Wherever it manifests itself, it has a strong ability to characterize HUMAN groups. Music is the aggregation of hearts and minds that travel as one always and everywhere.

How did you hook up with Toolroom for the new single?

I had been trying to join this wonderful family for about 4 years. Then on March 17, 2023 I managed to release my first single on Toolroom “TOMALO”, and from that moment everything was easier. It takes a lot of perseverance and passion, but also a lot of luck. Never give up but always fight. The Toolroom always has an eye out for new Emerging Artists and I feel really lucky.

Your tracks really lean into the rhythmic elements of production. How do you go about creating an infectious sense of groove in your music?

The Groove is a very important part of a song. Whether you produce Tech-House, House, Techno or any other musical genre, learning how to create an effective rhythm part can greatly raise the quality level of your production. The Groove is the most important section of a record and it is essential to customize it to make it unique. To stand out from the crowd it is important to look for new sounds and new techniques, then experiment. To avoid the rhythmic part being too static, I add variations within the Groove. This way my tracks don’t sound monotonous.

Tell us about your current studio set up – any particular bits of go-to kit you find yourself returning to?

I work in my Home Studio. I have a console with 2 CDJ 2000 nexus and 2 Technics 1210. My productions are all made with my computer which allows me to go fast without using external machines which would slow down my creative process. Obviously for mixes and masters I turn to professional studios. Turntables allow me to listen to old vinyl records from which I always take inspiration.

Which artists are currently exciting or inspiring you?

Obviously the Boss Mark Knight, Matthias Tanzmann, Miane, Green Velvet and Jamie Jones who are the giants that I LOVE. But I don’t want to neglect new recruits like me. Freenzy, Crusy, and so many others who still have a lot to give just like me.

What have been some of your more memorable live performances from the last few months?

Memorable evenings in Italy? Where I am never free to express myself musically? Where do international stars struggle to reach? I don’t want to express myself too negatively, but here in my country there is little space for my gender. So I would say that there were many evenings, but none were “MEMORABLE”.

What should we expect from you for the rest of 2024?

My 2024 got off to a great start with the first release on January 12th on Toolroom Trax with “STUPID DISCO”. Expect lots of good music from me. I hope that 2024 will be my year and that apart from my records that have toured the world, I sincerely HOPE that I too will be able to play around the world.

A big hug and thanks for having me.
