One listen to Frankey & Sandrino’s first musical offering of the year and you feel transported to a distant, utopian corner of the world, as this superb remix takes you on a journey guided by the ever-present rolling bass drums. providing the perfect soundtrack to life’s private moments.
The original track comes from a stalwart of Italian independent electronic music, Shield’s Rebirth Records. Under the moniker Silky Sunday, Roy Stroebel and Mike Rubin offer a ‘song of hope amongst a climate of insecurity and emergency’. Frankey & Sandrino offer an alternate perspective of this optimistic outlook, carving out a brooding, four-to-the-floor dancefloor stomper – clubs or no clubs, there’s no doubt where this track is intended to be heard. Heavy piano chords and sombre synths set the tone for a brief glimpse of the original vocal chorus, whose cry of ‘It’s a whole world thing’ in its new context evokes more of a call-to-arms than a proclamation of togetherness and unity.
“Remixes for us are about interpretation. Taking elements, sounds or meanings and developing, twisting and reimagining them, but without thinking too much about it”, write’s Sandrino. “Each time it’s a different process for us”, continues Frankey. “There was no intention to change the emotions or feelings of this track, it’s based on a musical instinct. Sometimes we try and limit ourselves by using less of an original track.”
Whatever the intention, Frankey & Sandrino are clearly not resting on their laurels during this unwelcome hiatus from the DJ booth, priming themselves for a return that is sure to be laden with an arsenal of new dancefloor-ready material which will see the light of day on various labels throughout 2021 as well as their own imprint, Sum Over Histories.
Frankey & Sandrino’s Remix of ‘Whole World’ is out on Rebirth on January 29th 2021 (digital).
