Gatlin Black’s music can be described as vintage meets modern; old meets new. Pairing grungy guitar tones with layered vocals, the band offers raw power, electric energy, and an undeniably authentic feel. They blend multiple genres into their own brand of alternative rock, resulting in a style that feels both fresh and nostalgic.
Their debut seven-song EP, Modern Spirit, evokes a familiar sound reimagined for a modern age. Featuring the band’s previous singles, “One Last Chance,” “When You Come Down,” and “Lazy Susan,” the EP feels rooted in vintage influences while still speaking to the present.
“Modern Spirit was both a statement and a turning point for Gatlin Black,” says the band. “To come out of the gate guns blazing, hoping to create a buzz but also to learn as much as we could about the songwriting/releasing process so we could become a music making factory. We chose to record with producer Jordon Zadorozny and engineer Rich Allen with a clear purpose: not just to capture the songs at a high level, but to push ourselves deeper into the craft of making records. The goal was never simply to release music; it was to become the kind of band that can write, perform, record, and produce our own work from the ground up. In that sense, Modern Spirit reflects the DIY mindset of the modern era—artists building and running their own creative engine.”
While each song is a great listen on its own, the EP best serves the listener when heard as a full collection, track-by-track as intended. The songs weave like a storyline, outlining themes of perseverance, self-doubt to self-care, and personal evolution. It’s relatable and real, with rawness that shines beneath the wonderful melodies and music.
The EP’s title, Modern Spirit, is also a reflection of personal transformation within the band, namely for frontman Jake Weckworth. Many of the songs capture his change from a heavy party lifestyle to a healthier, more focused path. It’s a collection of songs that show the band taking on life’s challenges and channeling that energy into something creative, disciplined, and self-sustaining.
While not an official single, the EP’s focus track (“River of Doubt”) is an underdog story about willpower; very fitting for the overall messaging throughout these songs.
“It speaks to the moments in life when people around you have written you off or stopped believing in what you’re capable of,” say Gatlin Black. “The “River of Doubt” represents that current of negativity and skepticism that can surround you, whether it comes from people you thought were your friends, concerned family members, or your own inner voice. Instead of being victim to the undertow, the song is about pushing forward through that endless current and proving—to yourself most of all, that you’re stronger than the doubts placed on you. Ultimately, it stands as a reminder that even when belief from others fades, the determination to keep going can still carry you somewhere better.”
With the theme of transition and moving forward at its core, Modern Spirit became the blueprint where hard work, purpose, and ambition all connected for Gatlin Black. “This EP is so much more than another batch of 7 songs; it’s a journey through the soul and mind.”
