Brooklyn indie rock outfit Wetsuit returns with “Midwest Dream,” their latest single and video via Substitute Scene Records. The release follows their 2023 debut, Sugar, I’m Tired, and marks an exciting new chapter for the band.
Produced by Alex Farrar (Indigo de Souza, Wednesday, MJ Lenderman), “Midwest Dream” the song came to life when Wetsuit left Brooklyn for the rolling hills of Asheville, recording with Farrar to tap into the raw, unfiltered energy that defines their sound. The result is a striking blend of soaring vocals, crashing guitars, and emotionally charged lyricism; what The Big Takeover describes as “Regina Spektor fronting Beach House.”

Formed during Becker’s unexpected pandemic detour to her childhood home in St. Louis, Wetsuit quickly made a name for themselves in the Brooklyn indie scene, known for high-energy performances, hair-flipping theatrics, and infectious melodies. After years of supporting indie rock boyfriends from the sidelines, Becker decided to channel her own voice, leading to an evolution that transformed her childhood bedroom compositions into a full-fledged rock band. She is joined by original members Anders Nils (lead guitar), Paul DeSilva (bass), with Tess Kramer joining on drums in 2023.
After touring the Midwest in support of Sugar, I’m Tired, and being named one of Oh My Rockness’ Hardest Working Bands in 2023 and 2024, Wetsuit is set for an even bigger year. Their live performances have been praised for their raw vulnerability, dynamic stage presence, and the perfect balance between tight musicianship and an emotionally charged atmosphere. Becker’s ability to shift from hushed intimacy to soaring choruses within a single song has solidified Wetsuit as one of the most compelling up-and-coming bands in the indie scene.
“Midwest Dream” is a tribute to frontwoman Allison Becker’s mom; a thank you for everything she’s done and a celebration of this new chapter in her life. Growing up, Becker admits she didn’t always appreciate her mother the way she should have, but as she’s gotten older, she’s come to see the sacrifices her mom made for her children and holds immense respect for her. The song reflects on that journey and honors this new season of her mother’s retired life where she finally gets to focus on herself and the things she loves.
“I grew up in St. Louis, where there’s a saying: ‘If you don’t like the weather, wait 5 minutes.’ As a Midwest girl, I can confirm the weather does change every 5 minutes, but the saying is why I embrace the seasons and changes in life. There’s so much you can’t control, and sometimes it’s all about finding the little pleasures and riding out the storm,” Becker explains. That sentiment echoes throughout the song, especially in the refrain: “They say if you don’t like the weather, wait and it will go.”
That theme of change carries into the “Midwest Dream,” music video. Shot in a single take, it features Becker as a newscaster; an anchor reporting on a storm, both literal and metaphorical. The performance unfolds on a TV screen placed in a plush, intimate setting where the viewer becomes the subject of the song, watching from the couch with a glass of white wine (or, as affectionately called, “mom juice”), workout videos playing in the background. It’s a snapshot of life’s quiet routines, sacrifices, and joys.
Their influences, which range from Waxahatchee and Indigo de Souza to Big Thief and boygenius, shine through in their deeply personal yet widely relatable songwriting. Lyrically, the band explores themes of longing, reinvention, and the bittersweet nostalgia of growing up and moving on.
Wetsuit continue to prove themselves as one of the most exciting indie rock bands to emerge from Brooklyn in recent years. With a blend of introspective songwriting, gripping live energy, and an ever-evolving sound, Wetsuit is poised to make 2025 their biggest year yet.
