Irish R&B artist Matt Ó returns with the infectious new single ‘Sonny’. Having made a name for himself as one half of alternative hip-hop duo Tebi Rex with the release of two studio albums, tours across the UK and Europe and appearances at festivals such as SXSW, Eurosonic and The Great Escape, Matt Ó has begun to now make a name for himself as an artist in his own right with a whole host of press, radio and playlist support. Now taking a leap into his first full release, Matt is hoping to continue this string of success from the already acclaimed solo project.
A chilled R&B track showcasing the melodic, pop oriented side of Matt Ó’s repertoire, ‘Sonny’ showcases not only a track full of catchy hooks and warming, lo-fi instrumentation but also Matt’s effortlessly charismatic, silky vocals and flawless flow. Setting the stage for what more is to come, this is a strikingly complete sounding track from an artist with a rich history of successes.
Talking about his decision to write solo material and make the music he wants to make, Matt explains:
“When I was 12, my teacher gave us a writing exercise. Anything we wanted. I knew he loved history. I knew I didn’t. Still, I went for it, and I wrote an absolute piece of garbage for him. His words, not mine – I can tell that you wrote this because you thought I’d like it. Instead, you should write about what you know – not what you think others are interested in. That’s where you get something special, where you find the best art. That’s what this tape is to me. It’s what I know.. myself. I’m soft, I’m unassuming, I’m grateful, I’m cheeky, I’m romantic, I’m sad, I’m anxious at times and at other times entirely confident in who I am and what I can do.”
Having previously been RTÉ 2FM track of the week, Matt Ó has had his music featured across tastemaker press including Hot Press, District Magazine, Notion and IMRO. Having also landed editorial playlist placements across the likes of: Fresh Finds Pop, New Music Friday UK, Breath of Fresh Éire and Ireland 2.0 Matt has built a strong fanbase and continues to grow as an artist. Taken from the upcoming EP MESSER (Due for release later this year), Matt describes the new single ‘Sonny’ as being “like the phrase, ‘Get your money up, not your funny up’ – but in song”.
Set for release July 8th, ‘Sonny’ will surely see Matt Ó cement his place as an exciting, up-and-coming solo artist ahead of the release of the upcoming EP.
