The Indie-pop artist is set to release her latest track, “Anhedonia,” on February 16, 2024. The song, born out of collaboration with musician Ethan Butler, explores the depths of emotions tied to the inability to feel pleasure or joy—a theme rooted in the artist’s personal experiences with depression.
“Anhedonia” is a collaborative effort between Jessica Hunter and Ethan Butler, conceived during a studio session just after Christmas. The track features a simplistic guitar melody and a prominent electric guitar sound developed by Butler. The lyrics explore the condition of anhedonia, capturing the essence of being unable to find joy in things once loved—a symptom of depression. The song was written in just twenty minutes, with the creative process driven by personal connections to the emotions conveyed.
On the track, Jess says:
“’Anhedonia’ is a song that delves into the feeling of being unable to experience joy or pleasure. The lyrics explore the loss of love for things once enjoyed, and for me, the track takes me back to a time when I was stuck in a depressive cycle. At that time, I lost all joy in creating music. I struggled with severe writer’s block and had doubts about what I wanted to do with my life and career goals. Listening to the song now, I feel proud to be able to speak about those emotions and reflect on my personal growth.”
