Toronto singer-songwriter Julian Taylor is looking back over his storied career as a solo artist and band leader of both Staggered Crossing and the Julian Taylor Band.
His upcoming Anthology collection, set for release on October 20th, traces the development of Julian’s voice and exploration of a multitude of genres, providing greater context to his accomplished folk and Americana sound that led to his 2020 breakout record, The Ridge, and celebrated followup LP Beyond the Reservoir, released last year.
“Georgia Moon” is an acoustic guitar and vocal driven story song which follows the tale of a bandit being chased across the eastern seaboard, set in what Taylor describes as a “wild west modern romantic era.”
“This was one of the first songs that I had written and performed at the open stage at The Rose and Crown in Toronto. My friends in Staggered Crossing and I were aspiring under age musicians that would hop from one open stage to another in the Yonge and Eglinton area in the mid 90’s. There were several jams there, Broadway Bob’s, Scruffy Murphy’s, Kokomos, Cheers and The Rose & Crown. It was a pretty vibrant independent music scene then and that’s where we cut our teeth.
I used to play this song frequently at open stages and it went over really well. It was never officially recorded and as I reflect on much of my work it felt like the right time to go back into the studio and finally nail it down.”
