London based singer-songwriter Khazali delivers his first track of the year in the form of ‘Passion Controller’, out now through Kitsuné Musique. Lifted from his forthcoming EP ‘The Rush’ due later this year and marks a new creative direction for the rising Hackney star.
He says: “My sophomore EP, ‘The Rush’, is what happened when I took four dream journal entries and turned them into a fully fledged pop universe – complete with colour, character and story. It follows a Californian couple, (Tony and Lennie) and their rise and fall through love and life. Whilst what you’ll hear is fresh AF, I’m proud to say that my EP took cues from the people I admire to help shape its overall sound. Expect to hear hints of the bands I grewup listening to; Metronomy, Little Dragon and The xx, as well as the pop I discovered relatively recently, like Dua Lipa, Arlo Parks, and Alfie Templeman.”
With a knack for catchy, earworm-like melodies, Khazali has created a brand of pop that spans melancholy, euphoria and dreaminess, not unlike the instantly relatable sounds of Arlo Parks, Dua Lipa and Alfie Templeman, with an indie edge reminiscent of The xx and Metronomy. His debut EP, Going Home, Vol. 1, released in April 2021 via Kitsuné Musique grew quickly to become the label’s top performing new release. The EP also aroused a keen curiosity from a breadth of tastemakers, landing him coveted spots on Awkwafina’sTV show Awkwafina is Nora from Queens, Spotify’s top-tier playlists such as Chill Dance, Alt R&B, Alt-Pop andIbiza Sunset – as well as consistent support from BBCRadio 1, 1xtra, and selected for BBC Introducing’s“Hot List”. In January 2022, Khazali followed the footsteps of Griff, PinkPanthress and Joy Crookes when it was announced that Spotify would be championing the artist as part of their RADAR programme.
