Khazali’s minimal and warping summer-banger is a departure from his bedroom chill-pop. With effervescent vocals reminiscent of Blood Orange and Sampha, Khazali packs soul, with production holding an edge that playfully touches on lo-fi indietronica influences.
‘Writing this helped me move on from a bad mind-space whilst holding onto my feelings’, says Khazali on his third release You’ll Be the One, a colourfully minimal and feel-good summer track which drops on Parisian label Kitsuné Musique.
A member of Slow Dance, an off-kilter collective ‘at the cutting edge of London’s live music scene’ (Dazed) since it’s first impromptu party in 2015 (which debuted Sorry), having shared the stage with the likes of Biig Piig at The Windmill, Khazali took an unintentional step away from his sonic experiments in 2017, joining electronica-pop outfit VRWRK as vocalist and writer on bangers like ‘Face It’ (NME) and ‘Hearts Beating In Sync’ (The Fader).
But it was on Slow Dance’s first compilation that Khazali piqued the interest of taste-makers with ‘Ode to Mark’ – garnering over 100,000 Soundcloud plays and spots on Spotify’s ‘Fresh Finds’ and ‘Counter’ playlists. Recent release ‘Stories’ attracted radio support from Huw Stephens (Radio 1), Jamz Supernova (Radio 1xtra/ Selector Radio), earning him coveted spots on BBC Introducing’s ‘The Hot List’ and Hype Machine’s Top 5 newsletter, Stack.
