Today, Lav shares a powerful double release which combines an original track called “Sardine Song” and a cover of Sparklehorse’s “Spirit Ditch”.

“Sparklehorse and Mark Linkous has inspired my writing style and got me through a very dark time” says Lav.
“(This may be TMI) but last suicide attempt I made, I woke up and realized I’d left my Spotify playlist on very loud, and this song was playing. I felt it was a sign, being that my attempt was not successful and how Linkous ended his life; a sign that my story wasn’t over. Parallels to our lives have continued to inspire me to use music and writing as a coping mechanism.”
Both tracks have a crushing intimacy with Lav’s whispery vocal delivered over tape hiss. A similar rawness was a feature of her breakthrough, “From Me, The Moon”, one of two songs Billie Eilish said she wished she wrote in interview with CBS around her record breaking 2020 Grammy win.
Like “From Me, The Moon”, “Sardine Song” is about Lav’s intense first love: “I was ready to love him, but he wasn’t, and now I don’t think he would ever have been ready”, she explains.
“He told me to wait until he was 25, that he’d be ready then. We haven’t spoken since he said those things to me years ago, and we’ve both moved on, but as I know he approaches 25 it’s funny to me that I ever believed it was about his age.”
This double release sees Lav pause from the body of music she continues to put together which she describes as “all of my woes and 3am poetry entries filtered through a plethora of sounds and musical influences.”
Last years’ singles, “From Me, The Moon”, “Wavvy” and “The Girls Before Me” developed a deep connection with her sizable online fanbase as she won strong support in the media from Paper, Fader, Nylon, NME, Notion, Dork, The Line of Best Fit, NPR, Dazed, The Face and many others.
“Sardine Song” and “Spirit Ditch” are out today on Color Study. Both tracks have been produced by Jamie Macneal who worked on Lav’s label mate Rosie Carney’s critically acclaimed full length rendition of Radioheads’ seminal mental health album The Bends which came out in December last year.
