Lil’ Red Records Releases “Why Don’t You Do Right?” — A Raw, Spacious Reimagining of a Jazz Classic

Lil’ Red Records unveils a new release today from Jen M of Lil’ Red & The Rooster with “Why Don’t You Do It Right?” (feat. Bobby Floyd), a reimagining of the classic Joe McCoy / Lil Green-era standard. Stripped, spacious, and subtly dangerous, the track leans into restraint and atmosphere, offering a fresh interpretation built on texture rather than force.

Watch the video here:

The song is grounded in a gently plucked acoustic banjo guitar that sets a sparse, open foundation. That instrument anchors the piece, while other elements drift in and out around it, creating space rather than structure. The banjo guitar from G-Louis (The Rooster) is not the central or foundational voice, but a textural layer that adds subtle movement within the wider arrangement.

From there, the arrangement unfolds with careful understatement: washboard scratch, an out-of-tune upright piano, gitjo twang, and bongos from The Governor, all contributing to a soundscape that feels intimate and intentionally unpolished.

Lauren Tucker (Images of Apollo) and Jen Milligan share vocal duties equally throughout the track, each carrying the song with the same presence and emotional weight. Their intertwined performances create a soft tension and closeness, reinforcing the track’s intimacy without positioning one voice above the other.

Rather than holding back entirely, the song does build toward the end, gradually expanding in dynamics and emotional intensity as it moves forward. This slow rise adds a sense of release that arrives organically, without breaking the track’s restrained core.

Bobby Floyd’s contribution adds another layer of nuance throughout the track. His piano lines weave gently through the arrangement rather than sitting on top of it, reinforcing the song’s reflective tone and expanding its emotional depth without ever distracting from the core vocal and acoustic foundation. It is a subtle collaboration that enhances the overall atmosphere while preserving the track’s minimal, grounded structure.

Rather than building toward conventional intensity, the track draws its strength from stillness, space, and texture, allowing all of its elements to accumulate naturally into a quiet, unfolding emotional arc.
