London Neo-soul-come-R&B riser Tammie, aka The Butterfly Grl, shares the infectious debut single ‘Help Me Help Myself’ (March 22nd).
Growing up between a small countryside village in West Sussex and the bustling city of Brighton, Tammie’s entire life has been leading up to this very moment. With conceptualism at the core of Tammie’s creativity, through the universal symbolism of and her own connection to the butterfly, she paves the way for the resurgence of a well-needed era of creative artistry in the music landscape. Using music as a true means of expression to tell her life’s story, her mission is to share art that connects and transforms. Blending influences of everything Soul, RnB, Jazz and HipHop, her unique vocal tone is one you’ll never forget, nor mistake with any other.
Encapsulating a true representation of facing ourselves at every stage of our evolution, Tammie’s debut delves into themes of isolation, self-reflection and the egoic state of mind – a relatable exploration of the struggle to find happiness amidst self doubt. Produced by Grammy-nominated and Multi-platinum Billboard-charting producer, The 25th Hour – Andrew Gowie (acclaimed for his work with Lou Val, JON VINYL, Majid Jordan and Drake), ‘Help Me Help Myself’ opens with a soundscapes of modulation drenched guitar under Tammie’s silky vocals. Growing gradually throughout into a wash of synths, deep bass and subtle strings, the track’s chorus oozes with vibrancy before eventually introducing an unconventional beat in the latter half of the track.
Talking about the track, Tammie explains: “HMHM was really born from a desire to be more honest with myself through my music, and was written about the struggle to pull myself out from dark and isolating times. Although it’s scary being so open and vulnerable with the world, I think it’s important as an artist to be that relatable voice for the unfiltered human experience.”
Although this may be the first time hearing about Tammie, she’s no stranger to the music scene, and has been live-performing her original music since as young as 13, after having started writing and playing music at just 9 years old. Even before this, Tammie had already established her passion for the performing arts and poetry – winning lead roles in school showcases, as well as talent and poetry competitions. She describes the beginning of her artistry: “when I took my poems to the piano in my Mormor’s home, and they suddenly became songs, I never looked back after that”. In 2014 the Argus Newspaper featured the then 13-year-old-Tammie’s first original live-performance at the notable Concord II venue in Brighton, leading to an opportunity to record her showcased demo at The Levelers’ renowned Metway Studio. This birthed the 10-year journey leading right up to this moment – Tammie is now back and ready to take the world by storm in 2024.
Taken from her upcoming debut EP due for release in summer 2024, the single offers a first taste of this exciting rising talent.
