The German duo INIT, consisting of Nadia D’Alò and Benedikt Frey, have shared their latest EP “Wrestle” on March 26th via the label and multi-channel platform Sound Of Berlin. Their release is followed by the music video, which was created by fellow producer/DJ Marc Houle.
About the video, Marc Houle says: “When I listened to the track, I heard some elements of early 80s synth going on. And although I’d always been a bit fascinated with the vaporwave movement, I felt it a little overplayed sometimes. So I thought I’d make a play on the compounded theme emerging which was the death of vaporwave in my mind. I created 3 dream worlds in Blender and had the drums and vocals trigger certain events. Then the fun part started when I got to the destruction phase and transformed the dreams into a sort of dismal reality.”
Despite the intensive use of analogue synthesizers and drum computers, INIT‘s productions cannot be pigeon-holed into the techno drawer. The duo breaks boundaries and creates their very own soundscape. On their latest EP, rhythmic and hypnotic sounds meet distorted and mystical vocals, which moves the EP somewhere in the mysterious middle of acid house, techno, ambient and krautrock.
Nadia D’Alò and Benedikt Frey, whose house productions have already been placed on Live at Robert Johnson in the past, met at university where they were both studying sound studies. The foundation of the joint project INIT in 2012 was the logical consequence of an experimental phase, in which the two worked together with different artists from other creative fields. The willingness to experiment continues with the duo mixing influences from the most diverse genres into a unique and coherent sound aesthetic.

The name Sound Of Berlin may sound familiar to avid electronic music fans. Having kickstarted the platform with the incredibly successful documentary two years ago, which showed interviews with some of Berlin’s most prominent figures in the scene. The project has now been relaunched with several new features.
