Singapore based musician / rapper / producer Masia One returns with a brand new track ‘Go Girl Go Get It’, due this November through Nusantara Records. Upbeat, heartfelt and brimming with positivity, Masia One is unafraid to break all the rules, merging elements of old school hip-hop over pop fuelled melodies and unfiltered lyricism.
Masia shares, “This song is the awakening of your best self. Literally! Get up in the morning and put this on while brushing your teeth and feel energized and empowered to face your day.”
Masia One has been on quite the personal journey over the last year. She took time off during the pandemic after being told she had a tumour found in her body and would undergo a major surgery. She changed her lifestyle, delved deep into learning about healing, balancing feminine energy and spent a lot of time in reflection. She emerged from this difficult time, cancer free with a fresh perspective on life and new music to share. ‘Go Girl Go Get It’ embodies the realisation of having another chance and getting back to a healthier hustle.
While learning more about wellness and self care, Masia realised that a lot of the affirmations and music didn’t reflect the styles that would motivate her own Hiphop infused tastes. This was the inspiration to write her own rap affirmations for others that may also share this palette for sound.
The lyrics of ‘Go Girl’ take us from waking up in the morning, to the busy hustle of the day as Masia adds “Even if the day is tough, a Hiphop charged affirmation can change the frequency of your whole vibe. You might even turn it around and attract the things you DO want in life.” The chorus “Take another look, take another chance, show em’ how you feel, do another dance”, is a reminder to take a chance on yourself by cultivating happiness and expressing your voice in the face of challenges.
On this release, Masia One teams up with her long time production partner ALX through Nusantara Records to create a beat inspired by golden era Hiphop. Throwing back to the days of Native Tongues, Common Sense or Eryka Badu, the song celebrates an era that put forward conscious lyrics, soulful instrumentals and high energy fun. The laid back drum pattern of West coast Hiphop influence laces the track, as producer ALX shares “I thought of this as a West coast driving song, the type of track you’d pop into your ride and just feel good”. The cover artwork is a collaboration with UK based illustrator Leah Sams, chosen by Masia for her diverse illustrations of women, always drawn with a sense of attitude, strength and diversity. The palette of pink and green are intentionally chosen to reflect the colours of the heart chakra at day break. In these times where we address a pandemic, mental health and our waning energy, this collaboration aspires to bring a positive vibration back into daily life.
