“Wish I Knew” sees SOUNDR reflecting on the insights that come with hindsight, considering how her actions may have influenced a past relationship. Her lyrics, blending regret and self-awareness, merge seamlessly with Medz’s dynamic production. The track gradually builds from gentle guitar and soft piano into layers of rich, orchestral sounds, capturing the process of release and acceptance. The final drop provides a moment of closure, marking the shift from wondering about the past to accepting the present.
Touching on how the collaboration came to be, Medz shares: “When SOUNDR sent us the first demo of this song in 2023, we immediately connected with the message behind the song. A song that felt very intimate but also quite powerful at the same time. A story that deserved to be told in a special way. We wanted to take our time with the instrumental, by slowly progressing in energy and tension, through various chord progressions, until the big reveal. The drop at the end of the track symbolizes that feeling of finally letting go, after months, or years, of beating yourself up over what could have been. We are so proud to officially announce the release of ‘Wish I Knew,’ and would like to thank SLANDER and Heaven Sent for believing in our vision with this one.”
Diving into the meaning behind the song itself, SOUNDR says: “‘Wish I Knew’ is one of those internal conversations you have when you’re looking back at how your behavior contributed to a relationship burning out. The tendencies to keep them at arm’s length, avoiding vulnerability, picking fights in some unconscious attempt to push them away. It’s about reflecting on not knowing yourself well enough to show up and love someone else properly, but very much wanting to. And months or years down the line, wishing you knew better, admitting you always kind of did, and wishing you could go back and do it again—to love them right.”
Medz, known for their emotionally-charged, genre-blending soundscapes, carefully crafted each layer of the track to capture the essence of self-reflection and growth. With previous releases alongside artists like Bertie Scott, Daye, and ExEDE, Medz has cemented their reputation for producing tracks that resonate with their growing audience. Now, “Wish I Knew” marks a new milestone for the duo as they join SOUNDR in delivering a message that is as universal as it is personal.
SOUNDR, known for her emotive lyricism in collaborations with MitiS, Adventure Club, and BLANKE, brings her signature depth and vulnerability to “Wish I Knew.” Her lyrics grapple with the complexities of self-sabotage, a theme that intertwines seamlessly with Medz’s cinematic production. SOUNDR has become known for her lyrical explorations of light and dark, adding a palpable duality to “Wish I Knew” that underscores the highs and lows of human connection.
“Wish I Knew” exemplifies the synergy between two artists who are unafraid to dig deep and bring their shared story to life. SLANDER’s Heaven Sent label serves as the perfect home for the release, supporting the track’s emotional weight with a platform dedicated to music that touches the soul. Medz will be bringing this energy to live audiences as they join Seven Lions at REBEL in Toronto and join Man Cub on tour with stops in Los Angeles, New York, Seattle, and Denver.
Medz & SOUNDR’s new single “Wish I Never” is available on all platforms via Heaven Sent.
