Some songs come together in a matter of days. Others patiently wait years for the right story to bring them to life. For Boston singer-songwriter Mick Eddy, that story arrives with “Hey Julia,” an infectious new single that transforms a long-forgotten instrumental into one of his most personal releases yet.

A vibrant blend of Latin rhythms, polished pop production, and heartfelt storytelling, “Hey Julia” captures the exhilarating rush of new romance, those first moments when one person suddenly becomes the center of your world.
”‘Hey Julia’ is about that spark of wanting someone to notice you,” says Eddy. “It’s that initial exchange when you meet someone who makes you forget everything else exists, and the song and dance that inevitably follows as you try to win them over.”
The foundation for “Hey Julia” dates back nearly five years before the song was completed. During the summer after graduating high school, Eddy and longtime friend Martin Aviles wrote the instrumental simply for fun, never imagining music would eventually become Eddy’s career.
As his songwriting evolved, Eddy continually returned to the bossa nova-inspired groove, believing it was waiting for the right story. Drawing inspiration from his lifelong appreciation of Latin music and classics like Michael Bublé’s rendition of “Sway,” a song his grandfather often performed for him growing up, he knew the melody deserved something meaningful.
That story arrived when Eddy met his girlfriend, Julia.
Rather than writing about an established relationship, Eddy chose to capture the excitement, vulnerability, and hope that come with trying to win someone’s attention. By using Julia’s real name, the song became an authentic snapshot of a defining moment in his life.
To complete the arrangement, Eddy wanted one final element that couldn’t be replicated digitally. After experimenting with virtual instruments, he invited Boston trumpet player Charlie Watson to record a live trumpet performance. Watson’s expressive playing weaves effortlessly through the track, adding warmth, movement, and an unmistakable sense of joy.
Produced entirely by Eddy, “Hey Julia” highlights his continued growth as both a songwriter and producer. Rich acoustic instrumentation, vibrant Latin influences, and contemporary production combine to create a song that feels both timeless and refreshingly modern.
Following the releases of “Come Over” and “About You,” “Hey Julia” offers another preview of Eddy’s forthcoming debut album, Strange Weather. Together, the three singles showcase an emerging artist willing to explore every stage of the human experience through thoughtful songwriting and immersive production.
Mick Eddy is a multi-instrumentalist, producer, and engineer whose sound reflects a multicultural upbringing across six countries. After originally studying Electrical Engineering, he shifted his focus to music, developing a fully self-produced creative process that culminated in his debut album, Strange Weather. He currently attends Berklee College of Music.
