Newcastle Indie Quartet Cat Ryan Release Debut EP ‘King of the World’

Newcastle based indie quartet Cat Ryan release their hotly anticipated debut EP, ‘King of the World’

Their distinctive blend of indie-rock and pop, showcased previously through acclaimed singles like ‘Mannerism’, comes to life in this new release. Led by the captivating and infectious new single ‘Rex Mundi’ – an energetic and empowering track addressing social injustice through the narrative of a greyhound fleeing its chains, the 5-track EP sees the band deliver their most complete work to date. 

Driven by lead singer, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Mary-Anne Murphy, the new EP offers an eclectic mix of melodic innovation and thematic depth, solidifying Cat Ryan’s position at the forefront of the emerging Indie music scene. Showcasing their signature sound characterised by robust melodies, infectious hooks, and musical experimentation, drawing inspiration from Vampire Weekend and Hippo Campus the band’s carefully-crafted lyricism explores thought-provoking themes, bringing a profound dimension to the songs over the infectious indie/alt-pop backdrops.

Speaking about the EP, the band explain: “‘King of the World’ holds a deeply personal significance as it features some of the earliest songs written by Mary-Anne back in 2017 for the project. Now, after years of evolution as an artist, these songs have been revisited, reworked, and recorded, reflecting the true and diverse essence of our style.”

Highlighting the EP, alongside the impactful single ‘Rex Mundi’ are innovative tracks such as ‘Speeding Too Slow’ and ‘Daydream’. Speeding Too Slow’, showcasing the depth of the band’s sounds – from explosive guitar led moments to shimmering synths and infectious pop influenced vocal lines. 

The band’s unique brand of Indie-Pop/Gaze has earned them acclaim, featuring across both BBC Radio 1, Radio Xand BBC Radio 6 Music  securing prominent festival performances at Truck Festival and the main stage at Y NOT Festival, and most recently, opening for Sundara Karma. Their artistry has been featured in a number of publications including Indietronica, NARC Magazine, When the Horn Blows, and Next Wave Cassette Magazine.
