Nicki Richards Releases the Hauntingly Beautiful ‘Tether Me’ feat. Mark Kibble

Some songs are written, some are inspired, and a rare few feel like they’re discovered in the air around us.

“Tether Me” falls into the latter category. Nicki Richards’s latest single, out today, is an ethereal, immersive masterpiece that takes listeners on a sonic journey through the turbulent yet beautiful waters of the human experience.

A song that emerged fully formed from a dream, “Tether Me” reflects the longing for connection, the uncertainty of life on the road and the weightless feeling of being adrift without an anchor.

Veteran vocalist, global touring A-lister, and producer Nicki Richards, known for her work with icons like Madonna, Mariah Carey, Quincy Jones, and Stevie Wonder, channels a lifetime of experiences into this profoundly personal track.

Written in a single, urgent rush after a dream woke her in the middle of the night, the melody is immediate and mesmerizing. Richards’s unpolished demo vocal captures that rawness ideally – a haunting, unguarded expression of vulnerability and desire.

To bring the song to its fullest potential, Richards enlisted the incredible Mark Kibble (Take 6), whose otherworldly vocal arrangement weaves through the track like a gentle tide and builds a vocal landscape that lifts and carries the song through its depths. Kibble’s contribution adds layers of harmony and texture that moved even him to tears during the recording process. The kind of collaboration elevates the song beyond its origins, turning it into a lush, rich, and expansive listening experience.

About the track, Nicki says:

“Tether Me” came to me in a dream. That feeling, the chord changes, the melody, it woke me up out of a deep sleep. I ran into my studio and blurted the whole thing out in 15 minutes. If that raw, craggy demo vocal is the salt or baking soda of a beautiful cake, then having you listen and enjoy is the frosting of that cake.

Masterminded by Aaron Fuchs, the production transforms “Tether Me” into more of a voyage. Fuchs’ approach to immersive audio creates a spatial experience, making it feel as though the listener is fully immersed in the music, surrounded by the ebb and flow of sound. It’s a quality that heightens the song’s emotional weight.

But it doesn’t stop there. Percussionist Bashiri Johnson ( Luther Vandross, Miles Davis, and Patti LaBelle) adds his magic, pulling out voodoo drums that evoke the ocean. One drum bubbles like water, another crashes like waves, while another mimics water’s gentle lapping against a boat’s hull. These rhythms make you feel like you’re drifting at sea, lost in thought, searching for something more profound. The way the drums interact with the vocals creates a sense of movement, the feeling of being pulled in different directions, swept by tides both calm and stormy.

At its heart, “Tether Me” is about longing for connection, grounding, and love that can steady you in the vast and unpredictable world. It is a song that will resonate with anyone who has ever felt unmoored and ungrounded, whether physically or emotionally. Richards’s soulful plea for love, the track’s luscious harmonies, and immersive sound production make this a profound listening experience.
