Florence-based duo Out Run return with “Gray Cloud,” an emotionally charged dark-pop ballad that confronts the quiet heaviness of depression and the aching loneliness that follows. Released as the next chapter in their signature “80s 3.0” sound, the track drifts between dream pop and atmospheric synthwave, echoing artists like Daughter, London Grammar, and Beach House, while remaining unmistakably their own.
At the centre of “Gray Cloud” is a stark metaphor: the persistent cloud that never breaks. Vocalist Ginevra Abbarchini delivers lyrics as fragile as whispered thoughts, tracing the feeling of crying out without being heard. The sun hovers like distant hope; the rain falls like sorrow that erases everything it touches. The refrain, “still in a gray cloud, caught in a gray cloud” circles itself like a thought that won’t let go, mirroring the exhausting cycles of emotional struggle.
“This song doesn’t resolve, because real pain doesn’t always resolve,” explains the band. “Gray Cloud ends where it begins: inside the storm. It’s an intimate portrait of trying to keep breathing when the world feels muted and far away.”
Musically, Out Run shape a soundscape that feels suspended in air: hushed synths, deep reverbs, and delicate vocal layers that hang like fog. There is no dramatic crescendo, just a slow, aching bloom of feeling, intimate and cinematic.
Formed in Florence in 2022, Out Run brings together singer-songwriter Ginevra Abbarchini and multi-instrumentalist Lawrence Fancelli, joined by producer Niccolò Messeri on select works. Their name nods to the iconic 1980s arcade game, a symbol of neon roads, endless horizons, and longing for escape.
Drawing influence from Chromatics, Cocteau Twins, College, and Videoclub, their music blends 80s nostalgia with contemporary electronic sensitivity, crafting emotional worlds that feel both cinematic and deeply personal. Their singles “Monster” and “Hideaway” surpassed 1 million streams in under a year, marking them as one of the most compelling new voices in the indie-electronic landscape.
With their debut EP approaching, Gray Cloud reveals Out Run at their most vulnerable and unguarded. A song suspended mid-storm, offering companionship rather than resolution.
