Robbie Gennet Expands Ambitious Orchestrated Rock Cycle With New Album ‘The Painted Bird’

A man with long hair sits confidently in an ornate chair, wearing a black jacket and white pants, with a smile against a backdrop of black curtains and a red wall.

Robbie Gennet is continuing one of the most ambitious independent music projects of his career with The Painted Bird, the next installment in a five-album orchestrated rock cycle developed over eight years and scheduled for monthly releases from August through December 2026.

Listen in here:

A multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, producer, author, and broadcaster, Gennet approaches the project as a complete creative undertaking, writing, arranging, performing, and producing the music himself. Following Phase and The Giver and the Thief, The Painted Bird advances a body of work that moves between piano-driven rock, chamber pop, funk, blues, vintage keyboards, and expansive orchestral arrangements.

The album’s track titles, including “The Cost,” “Tiger Eyes,” “Everytime I Wait,” “The Machine,” “Moving Along,” “The Con,” and “The Enemy,” offer glimpses into a collection that sits within Gennet’s broader exploration of melody, arrangement, and the possibilities of independently produced rock music.

The five-album cycle builds on an extraordinarily prolific period for Gennet. In 2025, he released ten self-produced full-length albums in ten months. His current undertaking expands that scope into a connected creative world encompassing music, literature, film, and live performance.

Alongside the albums, Gennet is developing The Red Sphere, an illustrated lyric book published by Innovative Ink Publishing and illustrated by Skot Olson. The project also includes short-film music videos and professionally filmed concert performances, creating multiple entry points into the larger body of work.

Gennet’s musical background spans decades of performing, recording, arranging, and producing across genres. His credits include work with Lisa Marie Presley, Nick Lachey, Fuel, and Everclear, as well as performances and recordings involving musicians associated with Pearl Jam, The Doors, Dave Matthews Band, MC5, and Little Feat.

Beyond his recording career, Gennet taught for nearly a decade at Musicians Institute and other institutions. He is the author of The Key of One, a self-teaching approach to music published by Alfred Publishing, and hosts The Curious Musician, a weekly podcast featuring conversations with working musicians about their craft, creative processes, and professional experiences.

With The Painted Bird, Gennet continues to explore what an independent artist can accomplish when songwriting, musicianship, production, and visual storytelling become parts of a single, sustained creative vision. Rather than approaching each album as a standalone release, he is building an interconnected series designed to unfold over five months, culminating in the final installment, Flood the Zone, in December 2026.
