Irish-Portuguese singer-songwriter Sam Segurado is set to release his sophomore album, ‘The Remainder,’ on February 24. Backed by an impressive history of support from global press outlets such as CLASH, Notion, Earmilk, and more, Segurado continues to evolve his indie-folk roots into a captivating blend of electro-indie-rock with an enigmatic poet’s soul.
Featuring recent singles as the night-time-drive-time ‘Looking For The Fox’, and ‘Phoenix’, a poignant anthem of loss, the eponymous title track ‘The Remainder’ sets us off on an adventure through a diverse soundscape of indie rock (‘JJ’, ‘Comet2’), folktronica (‘Miscape’, ‘Wreckovery’) and downbeat electro-pop (‘Overspace,). The second of a planned nine albums, Segurado elaborates on the title track:
“This song was the catalyst for the record. Recovering from the ending of one relationship and the early pining of what was to become another. That riff was like a lullaby, and the song grew from there. At its core it’s a breakup song, and a song for patience, and a song about hope, and confusion, and rebirth. It encapsulates all of the themes of the album, and so it took its title.”
The album’s title, ‘The Remainder’, evokes a superhero moniker, drawing on both meanings of the word — that which is left, and that which is still to come. ‘The Remainder’ is the part left of us after enduring hardships, stronger but forever changed. Segurado’s personal struggles, the mental health challenges faced by the album’s original producer Stephen Lovatt, and the turbulence of world events all shaped the album. Speaking on the photoshoot, Segurado explains “apart from leaning into the superhero theme, I also wanted to show that we are never alone in our struggles. So I put everyone who helped me with the album up on a wall, because it wouldn’t exist without them”.
Born in Portugal to an Irish mother, Segurado’s upbringing was marked by constant movement, never truly finding a home. His guitars, poems, stories, and songs became the consistent anchor through various cities and life phases. From cutting his teeth on the open mic scene in Dublin, he ventured into his first album, ‘Looking For The Fox,’ and now, with ‘The Remainder,’ Segurado explores even deeper emotional territories.
The album launch event is set to take place at Workman’s Cellar on February 25, marking a homecoming for Segurado. He will be joined by his full band for a performance that promises to be a powerful and emotional experience.
