MARIA Die RUHE has played live, DJed and performed as a vocalist all over the world. She is not restricted by genre and has a voice that can adapt to any mood and groove. She has released countless singles and a debut album, ‘Enarchy’ on her own label, Reduced to Root, that delved into pop, classic techno, melodic, indie, and more. Here she works with Tooker, a multi-instrumentalist, producer, and DJ whose storied career spans everything from high-energy main stage sounds to deeply personal introspection on labels like Crosstown Rebels, Sol Selectas, and many more.
Die RUHE initially began working on this song as a very private coping process around silence, disappearance, and emotional rupture. When she connected with Tooker in Sardinia at Sonar Studio, the intimacy and emotional depth of her version stood out immediately, and the pair shaped it together into a full production with deep respect for the original. The final vocals were recorded on the day Maria received a life-changing cancer diagnosis, which grounds it in vulnerability. This version exists as a reminder of music’s ability to hold space when words and people cannot.
Says MARIA, “I’ve carried Silence & Secrets by WhoMadeWho with me for years. It was a place of refuge, a song that returned whenever I felt left behind, without closure, without explanation. Knowing that something was hidden often hurt more than what was lost. Last summer, it happened again. I fell in love, and through a misunderstanding, the person disappeared. No words. Just absence. I began working on my own version of the song for myself, not as a release, but as a way to cope. I shared it quietly on social media, never imagining it would later become a full production.“
‘Silence & Secrets’ is a tender, heartbreaking and deep house sound. Her smoky, whispered vocals flicker like candlelight next to solitary keys and warm, sustained chords. It’s insular and intimate, but with a subtle sense of hope rising through the piano notes that linger as the soft, supple rhythm rolls onwards.
