Swiss Pleasure – the captivating indie rock trio from Berlin – are excited to announce the release of their highly anticipated music video for ‘2009’ – a visually striking and creatively resourceful production born from a set of unique constraints. The video portrays a person coping with isolation by hosting a tea party with imaginary guests, with scenes from the party on the verses taking place in a warm and cozy room, contrasting with dark, outdoor scenes during choruses, symbolizing the unavoidable intrusion of reality.
Formed in 2021, Swiss Pleasure blends indie rock, dream pop, post-punk, and jazz influences, thriving on their DIY ethos and unique sound crafted in Berlin’s underground music scene. Their diverse cultural backgrounds and shared love for blending genres create a refreshing, boundary-pushing approach to music that captivates audiences and challenges conventions.
Perfecting their visuals, the new music video adds visual depth to the body of work, exploring energetic yet reflective narratives: The lyricism looks at the emotional defense mechanism of adopting contempt to cope with feelings of exclusion. Alea’s nervous and energetic lead vocals contrast with Claire’s haunting, dreamy backing vocals, creating a compelling tension. Agathe’s drums, inspired by Fontaines D.C.’s “in ár gcroíthe go deo,” drive the track with a sense of urgency, while Alea’s guitar and Claire’s bass provide an excellent foundation.
“‘2009’ is a song about adopting contempt as a coping mechanism against feeling left out,” the band explains. “It invites listeners to reflect on their own feelings of hurt and anger.” SWISS PLEASURE
Embracing a DIY ethos, the band transformed their own homes and some of their personal belongings into the setting for a compelling narrative exploring themes of loneliness and derealization. In that same spirit, some ingenious techniques were employed by director Mayar Attia to achieve the video’s final and distinctive aesthetic such as the shimmery effects in the party scenes. Finally, the band made the creative choice of rotating who played the main/unmasked character in the party scenes as one of many little ways to further emphasize the personal and intimate nature of the project. ‘2009’ is a testament to the power of creativity and resourcefulness, proving that compelling visuals and storytelling can be achieved with limited means.
Agathe and Claire are from France, and Alea is Pakistani-British, born and raised in Bahrain. The trio’s intentional formation of FLINTA* members highlight their commitment to representing underrepresented voices in music. The trio’s latest EP, Heliotropia (released in August 2024) has established them as a force in the indie music scene, already setting the stage for their dynamic live performances and innovative sound.
