With the name Tara meaning ‘star’, Toronto-based Persian alternative pop artist Tara Jam is quite literally fulfilling the prophecy of her name. Making a name for herself as an independent artist already with 800k views on YouTube for her artistic music videos and over 500k streams on Spotify in less than a year with no label or manager, just 4 songs that radiate Tara Jam’s passion and imagination. Now Tara Jam returns with her vibrant third single of 2021: ‘SYNESTHESIA’. In the new single, Tara shows off her language skills by singing in both Farsi and French as well as English. Evoking a spiritual and celestial atmosphere, ‘SYNESTHESIA’ is the psychedelic dark-pop track not to be missed.
Tara Jam explains the meaning behind her new single:
“Synesthesia is about the transformative potential of the psychedelic experience and how it can unveil spiritual realms and the multidimensionality of our existence. While synesthesia is a condition, it can also be induced by psychedelics where one sense is simultaneously perceived as another sense, such as hearing and tasting colours or smelling and feeling sounds. I felt compelled to write about the trust, openness, curiosity, surrender, and acceptance that is practiced and cultivated in psychedelic journeys because of the ways these states of being have revealed my own inner power and healing capacity, which was pivotal in my process of overcoming depression. Whether we choose to explore our consciousness through substances, meditation, movement, breathing, hypnosis, sensory deprivation, self-reflection, or therapy, we are setting an intention to better understand ourselves in pursuit of a life coloured with truth, love, and peace. I hope Synesthesia reminds people of the power of their minds, the beauty of the process, and the magic of our presence.”
Tara Jam created this track with her partner the same way they create everything: at 4:00 am in their home studio. Looking for a psychedelic instrumental beat behind the song she wrote, Tara worked with her partner and producer SPVDE, who finished the melody in one night. SPVDE then worked on the track with 3 other members from his music collective called X2C. The track was finished at the Orange Lounge in Toronto where engineer Laguil added echoing effects, layered harmonies creating the ambient atmosphere.
Tara Jam likes to keep herself involved throughout the entire process of her artistic creation and incorporates all that she has learned from songwriting at age 6, to studying for over a decade at the conservatory of music. As a member of the LGBTQ2IA+ community and being a Persian woman, Tara’s views have always been around openness and acceptance. Tara’s values are reflected in her faith, being a member of the first monotheistic religion in the word; Zoroastrianism.
“Zoroastrianism is more of a philosophy than a religion- The 3 principles being Good Thoughts, Good Words, and Good Deeds. Our “God” is called Ahura Mazda, which translates to wisdom. We worship our minds, and practice the basic ideology that happiness is for those who seek to make others happy.” Tara Jam adds.
