Eric Martin / Me One has been on the electronic music scene for 32 years with no plans to slow down.
He came to fame as an original member of the seminal ’90s House act Technotronic, co-writing the classic “Pump Up the Jam” multi-platinum album. Selling over 14 million copies worldwide, sales figures don’t even do justice to the stature of anthems this beat miser created.
A studio perfectionist, his musical offerings have seen him release two hip-hop projects as Me-One, working alongside immortals such as Guru and The Roots.
Making his own hit records in between writing and producing other great artists (Maxi Priest, Capleton and Jeff Beck), Eric returns with a few more things this spring starting with a bouncy piece of sponge cake straight out of the oven: “83.
Eric says: “If Hip-House was a geographical location, that would be where ‘Retroflows 83’ comes from.”
The single’s infectious refrain is a statement of its supreme flavour: “F-R-E-S-H-E-S-T.” Simplicity is the main thing in the lyrics but this DAW-less production is anything but basic. It’s thick, gritty, tight and basement with a an early -‘90s edge. Eric serves beats that make heads fall off while Akil the MC (Jurassic 5) is blessed with a voice that effortlessly wastes the competition.
Eric also pulls in Mac Vaughn, Black Sonix and The Death Beats for remix duties on this ten- carat gem. These Knights of the Round Tables add their Techo, Deep House and Future Bass mixes to proceedings for shape cutters and shufflers to indulge themselves. Musicated Records has arrived!
2021 also marks 32 years since the release of “Pump Up the Jam, The Album” and Eric takes a unique DJ tour across the globe this Summer to that effect. Each performance will be a playback of Technnotronic’s entire album from start to finish with Eric graciously blending, scratching, mixing and cutting up buckets of extra-crispy hits with other limitless antiques.
