London based alt-pop Portuguese duo Vaarwell return with a heady dose of electronica, RnB and hip-hop influenced beats on their new EP ‘Consume & Grow’ released 18th June. Following on from the acclaimed singles ‘Fall Back’, ‘Tomorrow’ and ‘Consume’, the EP explores the duo’s innermost thoughts, detailing personal experiences over intricate melodies.
The band explain: “This EP is our first as a duo and it’s definitely the mark of a new chapter for Vaarwell. It was written in between Lisbon and London, and then produced and recorded in the latter during autumn and winter of 2020. London, both through its ambience, weather and music scene, had a huge influence in the EP’s sound and production. ‘Consume & Grow’ is about nurture and care for others, from a sisterly concern and advice giving to a romantic or friendly kind of care and attention.”
They go on to add: “This was the first time that we wrote all the songs together and in person, whereas before we would mostly work separately – it made a huge difference in our songwriting style and helped us create what we feel is our most cohesive and mature work yet. We were listening to a lot of UK based electronic, eletro-pop and R&B music, with some of our biggest musical influences during the creative process being James Blake, Biig Piig, Låpsley, Arlo Parks and Joy Crookes.”
Since Vaarwell’s formation, the duo has received support from BBC Radio1, BBC6 Music, NHK (JPN) and P3 Sveriges (SE) as well as accolades from tastemaker press Stereogum, Complex, Clash and The Line of Best Fit.
They have also collaborated with Xinobi, co-writing and singing in the single ‘Far Away Place’, with over 5M streams on Spotify and placements on Netflix’s original series “Trinkets” and Grand Theft Auto 5 Online.
Following the success of their second EP ‘Early Rise’ (2019) and the singles, ‘No Place for You’ and ‘False Promises’, Vaarwell performed at festivals such as SXSW, Waves Vienna, Rock in Rio Lisboa, Vodafone Paredes de Coura and NOS Alive.
Since their move to London in late 2020, the duo have written and self-produced a 4 track EP, ‘Consume & Grow’, to be released on 4th June 2021. The electro-pop record is a reflection of their new polished sound, influenced by the city’s atmosphere and the UK based electronic, alt-pop, r&b, and hip-hop music scene.
‘Consume & Grow’ is out 18th June on all digital platforms.
