VENNA “Echo”

VENNA is the new vision of Edmonton-based indie alt-pop artist, Shay Esposito. At the age of 15, VENNA (then Shay Esposito) was the youngest recipient of the Rawlco Radio 10k/20 grant and recorded and released her first album, For Annie, at the age of 16.

Her new song, “Echo” is an exploration of the tip into obsession, the reckless romanticization of an oppressive dynamic, and the underlying sadness that often drives it. Haunting and intimate, this song aims to draw attention to the often enticing nature of toxicity.

During recording, producer Trey Mills added in a sample (the “Hey, hey!” heard throughout the track) that immediately reminded VENNA of one of her favourite horror games, Little Nightmares 2. The sound inspired the metaphor of the echo (comparing an echo to another person the narrator’s lost love is replacing them with, someone who the narrator sees as a copy or a shadow of themself), and the aesthetic of the game helped to inspire the uneasy vibe of the track.

“‘Echo” was inspired by the idea of chasing lost love – or rather, the unwillingness to accept that love was lost,” said VENNA. “The narrator, while claiming that their love refuses to let go, is desperately clinging to the past as well.”
