Award-winning Austrian composer and producer Veronika Hanl shares the music video for her captivating track ‘Dancing in Nylon‘, out now. She also shares her brand new single ‘Where Do We Go‘, out on 24 June.

Featuring vocals from singer, songwriter, dancer and collaborator Julia Romana, ‘Dancing in Nylon’ exudes sensuality from the very first note. Reminiscent of a hopeful dream sequence, Veronika’s euphoric instrumentals paired with Julia’s sultry voice makes for a truly heavenly slice of left-field alt-pop. Written during lockdown, Veronika’s aim was to create something that people could dance to. The music video also stars and is choreographed by dance coach and choreographer Jenny Stones.
Veronika says, “I played around with some basic chord ideas on the piano, and used an old drum loop and guitar loops we recorded in the studio previously. I sent the basic structure and chord ideas to Julia and asked her to create some vocals and lyrics on top. I love working with Julia – we just understand each other when creating music, and what kind of vibe we are after. Julia got back to me with the lyrics within a couple of hours and just came together perfectly.”
Speaking of the track, Julia says, “I felt a very airy vibe when listening to Veronika’s instrumental so I tried to let myself fall into that mood as much as possible. When I first heard the instrumental I could picture a dancer in my head. A woman, euphorically spinning around in a room, carefree, feeling really good and sexy in her body.”
Veronika continues, “Immediately when I read Julia’s lyrics, I had the visuals in mind – a dancer in an abandoned warehouse, dancing carefree like no-one is watching. We are sometimes very stuck in our ways and structures that society puts upon us. This track allows you to break free and move around freely like you want to.”
Julia also features on Veronika’s most recent single ‘Where Do We Go’ with musician and vocalist David Era. For the recording of the instruments, Veronika decided to collaborate with different musicians. The piano was recorded with Tom Addison, a pianist and producer based in London, and the drums were recorded with Alessandro Ianicelli, who also did the production of the drums.
Naming Hans Zimmer, Thomas Newman, Rachel Portman and James Newton-Howard as her main inspirations, Veronika draws from her combined influences to create her distinctively cinematic soundscapes.
Coming from a background in classical music, she studied composition, music and sound production for media at the University of Applied Sciences in Salzburg and worked for a number of high-profile professionals in the music industry in Vienna. Since moving to London, she has been an assistant to RTS Craft Award winning Composer Dru Masters, on several TV series, as well as working with award-winning Composer Walter Mair on films and feature documentaries. She has scored award winning and nominated films which have showcased internationally, including the short, ‘Unter Toten – Among The Dead’ which won an award in the Category Best Soundtrack and Best Drama at the SoCal Clips Indie Film Fest in L.A., as well as Best Short at the Manchester Film Festival and at the Toronto International Film Awards. One of her latest works was writing additional music under award winning composer Isobel Waller-Bridge for the Apple TV series ‘Roar’, starring Nicole Kidman and Alison Brie.
Alongside her film work, Veronika now produces music for other artists regularly and is fast becoming part of the new wave of women contributing to their creativity in the industry. “It’s good to see more and more women in the industry – when I started as an intern, I was often the only female in the room. Nowadays more and more women are being trained as engineers, composers and producers, and one of my main goals is to always try and keep it as diverse and balanced as possible when working in a team on music projects – I think it’s very important.’
