Interview with LEV – Find Your Sounds

The second remix from the Riigs & Skenna’s Underpass EP sees LEV give us his take on Christal Shore.

Hi James, thank you for taking the time to chat with us today! How has the past year been for you?

Hey guys, no probs! It’s been great thanks, had some really nice shows plus it’s been a very productive year on the music side of things so can’t complain!

Where do you think the impulse to create music comes from for you?

I think it probably stems from my early childhood. Both my parents were always playing music whilst growing up. I’ve always loved music and its somehow naturally in my blood I guess.

What is it about the deeper end of the house spectrum that appeals to you?

I think the deeper stuff definitely grabs me in a more emotive way than other genres. Moody music always gets me!

How did you hook up with Londam for the new remix?

I was asked by my good pal Mark Allin if i’d be keen to remix his track Christal Shore that I really loved, it was a no brainer really!

For us the track almost delves into trance territory with some of its textures and melodies… would you agree, or are we reaching??

Hmmm I guess it’s definitely on the progressive side of things. I’ve always loved progressive house. To me it feels more 80s vibes especially with Juno 106 lead in there 🙂

Tell us about your current studio set up – any particular bits of go-to kit you find yourself returning to?

I keep it pretty simple tbh! I’ve got a pair of Adam A7Xs for monitors. For music I mainly use soft synths at the moment, a lot from Roland Cloud, all the Juno stuff always sounds incredible even in digital form. However, I recently purchased the Deepmind 6 analog synth which is absolutely incredible, especially for the stuff I tend to make!

We have to ask about My Friend. You’ve known Archie for more than 10 years now, how do you keep things fresh when you’re working together in the studio?

We are both separately pretty busy with solo work on other projects which breaks up the time that we do spend together in the week. I think it definitely keeps things exciting and fresh when we are in the studio. In general when we are working together we are always trying to push the boundaries of our sound and think outside the box which is always fresh and fun.

We read an interview from a few years back where you cited artists like Lane 8, Yotto, Stephan Bodzin, (early) Deadmau5, Pryda & KiNK as inspirations to the My Friend sound. Is that still the case, or has your sound evolved since then?

I think for LEV pretty much all of these fit in terms of inspiration. I’d say a lot these also creep into the My Friend sound also however with a heavy edge inspired by people like Dusky and Joseph Ray to name a few.

What are some of the things you learned from working with other artists throughout your career?

To always be completely honest and true to what you are trying to achieve together!

Which artists are currently exciting you?

Joseph Ray, Jon Hopkins, Bicep

What should we expect from LEV in 2023?

A lot more music and also some gigging hopefully as I have yet to play out as LEV 🙂
