Alec Cheer shares new EP ‘Seeing in the Dark’ via Bulletdodge Records

Glasgow-based musician Alec Cheer, also known as Cheer, returns this autumn with his latest EP Seeing in the Dark, out now via Bulletdodge Records.

Available now here.

Known for creating music that feels both intimate and expansive, Cheer crafts soundscapes where delicate guitar and piano motifs intertwine with field recordings, loops, and layered atmospheres. His work is rooted in reflection and mood, favouring memory over spectacle.

Since the early 2000s, Cheer has released across acclaimed independent labels including Benbecula, Apollolaan, Drifting Falling, and At War With False Noise, as well as through his own imprint, Macrowhisker. His catalogue moves fluidly from the piano-led fragility of Low Summer Sunlight on Water (2015) to the immersive, cinematic atmospheres of his Night Kaleidoscope score (2018, Trunk Records). Beyond his solo practice, he has contributed to collaborative projects and worked across film, animation, graphics, and photography.

With Seeing in the Dark, Cheer turns his gaze inward once again, sculpting pieces that emerged through experimentation with textures, tones and rhythms until they made sense in their own little worlds. The title itself was inspired by an article on night walking, a theme that resonated with his own memories of growing up in a village in north-east Scotland.

Across the EP, Cheer weaves together deeply personal reflections and universal experiences. Opening track Aldi Werewolf recalls the restless energy of youth and the thrill of freedom, while Moon Phases draws on the beauty and mystery of the lunar cycle as a source of reflection, renewal and inspiration. Headspin captures fleeting perspectives and daydreams, likened to the rhythm of passing trains and the heartbeat of motion, and Memory Wave evolves from a minimal piano sketch into a meditation on overstimulation in the digital age, offering a moment of stillness amid the noise.

Together, these works form a quietly transformative body of music that lingers long after the final note fades. Seeing in the Dark is out 6th October via Bulletdodge Records.

Founded in 2008 by Gareth Whitehead, Bulletdodge Records has evolved from its roots in house and techno into a forward-looking platform for sonic experimentation, spanning ambient, dub, electroacoustic and leftfield sounds. Over the years the label has worked with an impressive roster of artists including Carl Cox, Robert Hood, Adamski, Roedelius, Marshall Jefferson, and Plaid, while remaining committed to artistic innovation and music-first presentation.
