In moments both quiet and loud, inspirational stimulus can strike an artist in any number of ways … and sometimes in the least expected of spaces. There can be few more profound and real places for B Jones to find the words for her songs, than whilst hospitalised for her lymphoma treatment.
With February’s ‘Side Effects’, and more recently still, the rallying cry of ‘Stronger’ focussing on sharper, more acute moments, her next release finds Bea sending a message out to the infinite. Per her own words and lyrics, with her “absolute truth”, the Spanish force is telling the ‘Universe’, she trusts the plan.
“Universe”, Bea shares, is a song I wrote after my diagnosis. If you look at the lyrics, they’re about starting over, and that is what I’ve had to do in so many ways. Learning to walk again, to organize myself, to write, and even to make music. At the same time, I realized how fortunate I am for all the support I have, not just from people, but from the universe in general. ‘Universe’ is a very, very deep song, written from my most absolute truth right now: starting over, having the courage to do it, and being grateful for the opportunity to begin again.”
Of the partnership, she notes:
I’ve always looked up to B Jones as a role model and the kind of producer I aspire to be. It has been an honour to collaborate with such an amazing person and influential artist. The passion she brings to her music and performances has established her as a trailblazer for female artists everywhere. When Black Hole Recordings reached out to me about working on Universe [Trust the Plan], I was thrilled to lend my voice to such a powerful song. I play her music often in my DJ sets and was humbled by the opportunity to help bring to life a track that reflects hope, even in the toughest of times. I know this song will resonate with so many people and encourage them to trust in the universe.
Forming a tight division of labour for the release, B Jones has worked with Ohio-born/Prague-based artist MIDI Kittyy. With Bea handling the song’s ocean-deep lyrics, along with its overdriving production, thermodynamic synths and floor-centric mainline, Kittyy equalises them with her wistful, bluesy tones.
