Black Light Smoke returns with ‘The Basement’, releasing 16th June via his Death Decay Magic label. a new release built around multiple evolutions of a track that has already become a standout in his live sets. An alias of Emmy Award-winning composer, producer, and musician Jordan Lieb, Black Light Smoke operates between house, techno, minimal synth, and post-punk, with releases on Turbo Recordings, Scissor and Thread, and Zone, alongside performances at BPM Festival, fabric, and Robot Heart.
“This track came together over time in my live set. Each time I would play it out people reached out to ask “what was that track with girl’s voice?” – and I know they mean this one. The vocal is actually me, and I used an AI voice tool to change it to woman’s voice.
This track has taken on so many forms in different versions, evolving over time. When it came time to release it I wasn’t quite sure which version to use. In the end I settled on the original, an EBM mix, and a club mix. I want the EP to show the journey of this track, as well as my sound.” – Black Light Smoke
In its original form, Black Light Smoke’s ‘The Basement’ is a tense, driving cut powered by snapping drums, distorted electro synths, and deadpan vocals that lend a cold sense of disillusionment. The ‘Vocal Dub’ strips things back while leaning further into EBM territory through angular rhythms, aggressive synth work, and sleazy undertones sharpened by flashes of cowbell, before the ‘Club Mix’ closes the release in full late-night mode, pairing convulsive drums with frazzled textures and metallic synth pressure for a raw and chaotic finish.
